With a backdrop of a cloud-wreathed Cader Idris range, the 12.35 from Machynlleth to Pwllheli (formed of a total of 7 dmu cars) crosses Barmouth bridge on the Cambrian coast line on September 22, 1983. The weather isn't exactly "flaming June" as a brace of Chester allocated 2-car class 101 'Met-Cam' DMU's (54060 closest) are seen at Barmouth during the lay over on train 2J13, the 06.43 Machynlleth to Pwllheli on 11 June 1985. This train used to stand here for 40 minutes (07.37 to 08.17) hence no driver as the crew got off for their breakfast. I believe this lengthy station stop was to allow for it to then be a schools service delivering secondary school children from the seaside villages north of Barmouth going to school in Harlech. New meets old at Barmouth in September 1986 when first generation DMUs such as the Derby class 108 (car number M54500) were giving way to new Class 150 "Sprinter" units such as 150140 on the Cambrian route. Bob Belcher.
By September 1987 nearly all passenger trains on the Cambrian Coast were worked by Class 150 Sprinters, but this is a "heritage dmu" (formed 53102/59591/53850) crossing Barmouth Bridge on the 14.10 Machynllech - Pwllheli on 2 September 1987.
