From a reduced number of operational platforms, the station was only handling the electric services to Ormskirk & Southport along with the DMU workings to Wigan Wallgate and Manchester Victoria via Kirkby. My notes recorded on that day have survived, and left to right we have a 3-Car Class 502 set formed of cars M29892M, M29580M & M28353M, awaiting departure to Ormskirk, alongside is Cravens Class 105, M50759 & M50792, polluting the atmosphere with its engines idling on a service to Manchester Victoria. On the adjacent platform is a newly-livered Class 502 consisting of cars M29895M, M29593M & M28366M ready to form a Southport working.
