An official image (BRC&W Collection, negative B15/40) of the exterior of a ER two-car BRC&W set (later Class 104) E56188 and E50597 circa May 1958 and is thought to be taken at Cleobury Mortimer which seemed to be a regular destination for BRC&W test runs. The destination blind reads Filey Holiday Camp, the pair would be delivered to Bradford Hammerton Street. BRCW.

This is a crop of an image (30214) showing the full three-car, to get a better view of centre car W59478. Taken at Cleobury Mortimer circa June 1960. The vehicle is believed to have been delivered to Laira with the power cars but by the end of the year it was allocated to Southall and working in-between Pressed Steel power cars. BRCW.

Less commonplace at Mortimer on the Reading to Basingstoke line than the regular DEMUs and giving a welcome splash of colour on the beautiful evening of 23 June 1989 was class 101 unit L837 led by 51437 (presumably with 59128 + 53751). The well-preserved platelayers hut was a bit of a rarity even then with most of these structures having long since become derelict. It looks as if the original brick-built hut has been lost but replaced by a newish garden shed although the chimney and fireplace survived. I guess that this was still in use at the time and I do recall talking to a ganger on this stretch of line who said that the good state of the track was a matter of considerable pride to him and his colleagues. This is near Mortimer station on the Basingstoke to Reading line on the morning of 1 May 1990 after a short walk along a convenient lineside footpath. Class 101 set L840 with 53311 leading (presumably with 59117 + 53322) was on a Reading-Basingstoke diagram. The performance of these diesel mechanical units was a bit more lively than the regular DEMUs but the exhaust note wasn't quite so pleasing to my ears. Peter Tandy.
