This is near Mortimer station on the Basingstoke to Reading line on the morning of 1 May 1990 after a short walk along a convenient lineside footpath. Class 101 set L840 with 53311 leading (presumably with 59117 + 53322) was on a Reading-Basingstoke diagram. The performance of these diesel mechanical units was a bit more lively than the regular DEMUs but the exhaust note wasn't quite so pleasing to my ears.
