As far as i know DMBS 53540 was one of only two Class 104 vehicles in the London area to carry Blue and Grey livery, 53477 being the other. Here, relatively fresh from works, it leads Class 117 vehicles W59497 + W51387 past Poplar Jn, just to the east of Acton Main Line, as the 0841 Reading - Paddington service whilst standing in for a non available W51345 in set L410 on 1st July 1987. Notice the lack of roof vents on this vehicle, a sure sign that it was asbestos stripped, possibly on its last overhaul at Derby Litchurch Lane during May 1987, the same time it was painted into Blue and Grey. The filthy enamel sign next to the cab, and no doubt the other affixed to the retaining wall slightly further down, reminded drivers to keep engine noise to a minimum as a hospital was located in the grounds above the brick wall. However it was closed in the early 1980s.
