A Class 101/110 hybrid three-car DMU, formed of Class 101 cars 51808 & 51799 with a former 'Calder Valley' BRCW Class 110 centre trailer, 59694, was making a smoky departure from Southport with the 13.20 to Manchester Victoria on September 18th 1988. The unit had been recently transferred from Cardiff Canton (C853) to Newton Heath depot to provide cover for the then ailing Class 142 Pacer fleet.
