Headcodes


London Midland Region

The staff Working Timetables (WTTs) give details of the headcodes to be displayed, each volume having a summary in the introduction, with the actual headcode for each individual train given in the tables themselves.

Until 1967 / 1968 the WTTs were divided into four different areas:
Midland Lines (London Marylebone / St Pancras to Nottingham, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool);
Western Lines (London Euston to Crewe / Stoke and all lines west of that);
Central Lines (north of Liverpool / Manchester to Preston / Fleetwood, Hellifield and Skipton); and
North Western Lines (roughly Chester / Liverpool / Manchester and northwards to Carlisle).
Each of those areas were divided into lettered sections.

Below are some examples, with the cover, the map of the area covered, and the pages with the headcode summaries being shown.

12 June to 10th September 1961: Midland Lines

These were from a 'combined volume' version containing all sections. The map shows the complete Midland Lines area, with a guide to each of the sections within.

Section A: Between St Pancras and Derby and Branches

Section B: between Marylebone and Pilsley and Branches

Section C: between Derby and Barnt Green

Section D: between Derby and Manchester and Branches

Section E: between Manchester Central, Liverpool Central and Branches

Section F: between Dunford Bridge and Manchester

Section G: between Trent, Ambergate and Chesterfield, and Nottingham and Shirebrook West

17th June to 8th September 1963: Western Lines

Section D: between Crewe and Holyhead and Branches

9th September, 1963 to 14th June, 1964: Central Lines

Section F: between Todmorden and Preston and Branches

15th June to 6th September 1964: North Western Lines

Section A: Between Crewe, Liverpool and Euxton Jn., Manchester Exchange, Chester General and Liverpool Lime Street and Branches

14th June 1965 to 17 April 1966: Western Lines

Section C: Birmingham Area

5 May 1969 to 3 May 1970

By now the different Line divisions were not mentioned.

Section M: Between Crewe, Dunford Bridge, Dore and Totley, Liverpool, Chester and Manchester Piccadilly, also North Staffordshire, and Branches
