There were some unusual set formations during NSE days, especially on the Western Region. Here the 1603 Didcot Parkway - Banbury 'stopper' arrives at its destination formed of Old Oak Common allocated set L211 53155+54287 - a class 101 DMBC paired with a Class 121 DTS. 13th July 1989. Nigel Mack.

Newcastle Central station pilot locomotive, class 03 No.03063, is captured framed between 'Peak' 45139 and Metro-Cammell DMU No.E53156 on 23rd May 1985. The class 03 was delivered new as D2063 on 14th July 1959 to York (50A) depot and subsequently worked from Stourton, Bradford Hammerton Street, York, Hull Botanic Gardens and Gateshead depots during its career. It was withdrawn on 26th November 1987 and is now preserved on the North Norfolk Railway. Gordon Edgar.

In a scene barely recognisable as the same today, Metropolitan-Cammell Class 101 unit 50157 + 56071, forming a Bishop Auckland to Saltburn service, passes the soon to be barren waste ground of the former Teesside Works Lackenby blast furnaces at Grangetown on 17th March 1983. The South Bank coke ovens are just out of view to the left and the converter at the Lackenby plant, under demolition in 2022, is to be seen above the railway as it curves away to the left. A three-car trailer brake Met-Camm DMU is seen in Thornton Junction station on 1 October 1969, just a few days before closure. Closest with Leven on the destination blind is DMC SC50158, at the time allocated to Dundee. The vehicle would spend the first 32 of its 35 year career on the Scottish Region. Dundee only had one TBSL at the time - SC59074. Transferred to the Scottish Region in 1966 where it remained - other than a brief spell at Chester - until withdrawal in 1991.
