101 DMU

25th April 1983

A Metro Cammell class 101 3 car unit rasps through Haymarket station as a member of the staff takes a well earned rest prior to the next Waverley bound arrival. 25th April 1983. Haymarket station has been completely transformed in recent times, rightly so given the volume of traffic it handles as Edinburgh's second station. Would be nice to journey through it again in a 101 though. Bruce Galloway.

The 16:25 Hull - Bridlington service leaves Cottingham on 26th April 1983. E56369 is the leading vehicle of a pair of two-car Class 101s, presumably with 51230. The vehicles on the right are parked on the site of the former goods yard. Fortunately the actual goods shed survives and is still in use with a local timber company. Syd Young.

A three-car Class 101 heads away from Birmingham with a Kidderminster service on 4 May 1983, seen about a mile out of New Street. The DMU is on the down Stour Valley line, on the left is the with Monument Lane loop. DMS M50326 leading does not seem to be with its regular set TS418 partners. Stuart Mackay Collection.

101 DMU

5th May 1983

Set: 101361

The 06:45 Kirkcaldy to Inverkeithing service on 5 May 1983, which continued unadvertised as a workers’ service to Rosyth Dockyard. DMS Sc50144 leads car, the remainder are three further Metro Cammell vehicles (one still in blue) and two bubble cars. Taken at Naval Base Junction on what was once the North Queensferry Branch. This was where the line into Rosyth Dockyard diverged from the North Queensferry Branch. The line to North Queensferry fell into disuse in 1954 but the box remained to control the convergence of the double line from Inverkeithing South Junction which became single line beyond here and to provide access to both Caldwell’s Paper Mill and Ward’s Shipbreaking Yard (via the line in the foreground, which also gave access to Cruicks Quarry which dispatched ballast by rail until the early/mid 1980s). Naval Base Junction signal box closed in 1964, replaced by a ground frame, when the double track between here and Inverkeithing South was singled. Brian McDevitt.

First DMU to Huddersfield, 1983 The Sheffield to Huddersfield service was re-routed to travel via Barnsley from 9th May 1983 and this is the first DMU to operate the service in the Huddersfield direction arriving at Barnsley station that morning. Someone has one of the doors partially open already, even though the train has half the platform still to travel! Andrew Walker.

DMBS M51190 leads a Class 101 formation at Rhyl on 15/05/1983 with a Manchester Victoria-Llandudno service. The second vehicle has a narrower grey band around the windows, which considerably alters the appearance, making it look more like a Class 108 at a glance. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

16th May 1983

Two two-car Class 101s arrive into Sheffield on 16 May 1983, complete with headboard, working the first passenger train following re-introduction of services from Huddersfield via Penistone and Barnsley. Paul Braybrook.

101 DMU

16th May 1983

Set: TS403

I’m not sure how often West Midlands DMUs made it to Devon but it seems a long way to me and certainly would not have been my preferred choice of transport for such a journey. However, this six car set comprising a Class 116 Derby Triple and Class 101 Metro Cammell Triple (TS403, 53336 and presumably 59114 + 53303) arrived at Exeter St Davids from the north on Monday 16th May 1983. In spite of the “Bristol Temple Meads” destination(!) this very busy train terminated at Exeter and was shunted into the sidings on the up side of the station. My attempts to identify the train from the timetable proved fruitless and it still remains something of a mystery. Brian McDevitt.

101 DMU

18th May 1983

45 055 is seen at the head of a 101 set at Manchester Victoria, 18/5/83. Jerry Glover.

101 DMU

20th May 1983

By 1982, north-east local services were solidly in the hands of Class 101s allocated to either Heaton (Newcastle) or Darlington depots, the Class 104s and 105s having departed by 1981. The next DMUs to arrive were the new Class 143 Pacers from 1985. This pair of Class 101s seen passing at Battersby on Friday 20/05/1983 will most likely have been allocated to Darlington depot, which closed in 1984. Graeme Phillips Collection.
