MEMO TO THE WORKS AND EQUIPMENT COMMITTEE

ECONOMIC OPERATION FOR RAIL PASSENGER SERVICES
IN RURAL AREAS

Works and Equipment Minute No. 771, 7th November, 1956, authorised the ordering of 20 rail buses at an estimated expenditure of £248,830, and also agreed that consideration should be given to placing an order for two further such vehicles with the Bristol Commercial Vehicles, Ltd.

This firm in giving an estimated cost of £11,000 per vehicle stated it would be their intention to ask for a contribution towards the development cost of a prototype vehicle, and it was subsequently ascertained that the figure they had in mind in this connection was £10,000 in addition to the £11,000 per car quoted above.

The Bristol Company require at least twelve months from date of order to produce the prototype vehicle with delivery of the remaining vehicle one month thereafter.

It is therefore recommended that an order be placed with the Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd. for two vehicles at a total cost of £22,000 plus £10,000 to cover development charges.
