DMU Accident

Midcalder Junction - circa 1983/4

These photos are courtesy of David Keppie who took them when he attended the incident in his capacity as Technician Officer at Edinburgh Waverley S&T.

He notes "The DMU was empty stock put into the Up Goods Loop on the Shotts line for the driver to change ends. The set was to form a service from Kirknewton Station to Edinburgh Waverley. The driver changed ends and set off when the trap points pointed out to him that the route had not been set. No on board staff were injured but there was possibly some soiled underwear."

The set was formed of two Class 107 power cars with a Class 101 centre car, the vehicle that can be identified is DMBS 51994.

The date of the incident is unknown — the foilage and the staff attire suggests summer or early autumn, and 51994 was noted running without the other regular 107 434 vehicles in summer 1983, the condition of the cab front looks consistant.
