A 2-car C304 (53130 + 53088) stabled overnight at Treherbert, 28/02/84 (or late '80s?). This was during the time of various reviews and saw the Rhymney line worked by a bubble car in the off peak between Rhymney and Bargoed and the Sunday Merthyr service was also bubble car worked with the vehicle working the 04xxish ex-Treherbert Monday to Saturday. Passing some fine GWR lower quadrant semaphores as it pulls away from Radyr on 10th March 1986 is Derby Class 116 3 car DMU set C304. Allocated to CF and wearing "Valley Lines" branding it is formed of W53088 + W59362 + W53130 and is working the 1213 Treherbert - Barry Island service. Delivered new to CF (86A) in September 1957 in its original formation of W50088 + W59038 + W50130 it was to remain working on the Western Region for just over 30 years with spells at CF, Cardiff Cathays and LA. It swapped its original trailer car for W59362 sometime around 1971 and became set C304 in 1974 after previously carrying set no's CDF 406, CTN 314, 314 and C314. The trailer vehicle 59362 was transferred away to TS on 19th April 1987 (where it lasted just under two weeks before being withdrawn) while both of the Driving vehicles were withdrawn from CF also on 19th April 1987 before being scrapped at Vic Berry's at Leicester. Nigel Mack.

Treherbert Station, 01/75, on a typical South Wales Valleys damp day. Note that the platform and station building (on extreme left) are completely seperate. In the platform is a BR (Derby) Suburban 3-car dmu (Class 116) No.C305 on a service to Cardiff and Barry Island. The station was built in 1901 by the Taff Vale Railway at its end-on junction with the Rhondda & Swansea Bay Railway. Hugh Llewelyn.

Class 116 DMU set C305 (Presumably 50131 + 59039 + 50089) passes under the Highfield Road bridge, just south of Heath stations at Heath Junction in Cardiff. With Rhymney on the destination blind, this is likely a Rhymney - Cardiff service. Undated, the unpainted cab window surround dates it to around autumn 1979, and, given the two photographers, possibly on the 12th August 1979 as the RPPR Welsh Warrior railtour would pass this way. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Class 116 DMU set C305 (presumably 53131 + 59039 + 53089) at Cardiff Bute Road station in 1986, before much of the development which has transformed the Cardiff Bay area over the last 20 years. On the left can be seen the former station building, which also served as the headquarters of the Taff Vale Railway before 1923. In 1986 it had recently been renovated and was in use as a museum (including an excellent model of the station in the late 19th century). Tom Burnham.
