Derby suburban set 332 on Hatton Bank in late 1962, 50121 at the front. Many of the Tyseley sets retained these early set numbers for many years, but with a 5 replacing the first 3. Michael Mensing.

17th March 1962
The photograph is taken from under the Camp Hill line looking towards Pershore Road bridge in Birmingham. The DMU is on what is now a road and it has just come under the bridge, to the right of it are the neglected sidings of Lifford canal branch wharf. This was taken on the occasion of a Birmingham University Railway and Inland Waterways Society special on 17th March 1962 by Peter Shoesmith. The Six Bells Junction website lists the vehicles as 50884 + 59339 + 50831. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

Standing in the middle of the Wolverhampton Canal near Dudley Rd Birmingham is a large brick pillar. This photograph shows that it once supported the steel bridge that carried the Harborne branch railway high over the water. On 17th March 1962, a grim, dark day, the Branch Line Society ran a Birmingham area railtour that included the Harborne Branch in the itinerary, a branch that was 2.5 miles long and terminated at a neat little station in Harborne. The passenger service was withdrawn in 1934 but freight from Chad Valley toys, M&B brewery and several coal merchants kept the branch alive until 1963. Today the station area has been built over but most of the trackbed is a delightful well surfaced walkway, an oasis in the busy city. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. This picture appears in B.R. Something a little different. Posters at Brynmawr in April 1962, the first three featuring DMUs. Why Queue? Why park your car? Why endure congestion? Diesel Rail Services are quicker - says the first. Despite all the diesel publicity, the DMUs didn't invigorate the passenger figures, and the fifth poster, on top of another railcar poster, seems to be the closure notice, the passenger services ended on the 30th of that month. The number of the leading DMBS cannot be clearly read other than ending in a 3, Tyseley only had two of these batch two sets at the time which makes this 50833 (the other being 831).
