This Class 114 DMU set (formed 53019 + 54027, with a Class 116 and Class 117 on the rear out of sight) was waiting to depart for a tour of colliery branch lines in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The tour was organised by the Institute of Mining Engineers. Andrew Walker.

Class 114s were quite a rare sight at Stratford-upon-Avon by 26 April 1989 so when I saw T221 (presumably 53002 + 54047) arrive at the station from my then nearby home I took a camera down for a shot. It is seen here leaving platform 2 with the customary exhaust smoke as the 08.13 to Leamington Spa with the familiar figure of staff member Aubrey Wheeler silhouetted on platform 1. I had good relationships with most of the staff here and Aubrey in particular who always put aside a copy of the week's Special Traffic Notice (STN) for to collect on either Friday evening or Saturday morning. This picture was taken in vertical format on a Mamiya 645 but a large scan has allowed me to crop it to landscape format without any significant loss of quality. Peter Tandy.
