Gloucester Eastgate on 15/7/72 - three years before closure with a class 118 unit (set B477, presumably 51321 + 59473 + 51306) on a Swindon to Cheltenham service. Rationalisation was already taking place with only the island platform in use. A long miserable footbridge often frequented by pigeons doing what they know best linked Eastgate with Central station. Stephen Burdett.

Set: C552

Swindon Cross-Country set C552 in Gloucester Central Station on 19th October 1974. Until the mid-1970s Gloucester had two main line stations although from 1968 they were operated as one. Shown here, on a grey rainy english day, is the ex-Great Western Railway Central station which is still open today. Pete LG99.

 DMU

19th October 1974

A Cardiff Swindon Cross-Country DMU in platform 1 of Gloucester Central on 19th October 1974. Gloucester was the southwestern extent of my Midlands Runabout ticket and I had just arrived from Birmingham and would soon take the bridge to Eastgate and return from there back to Birmingham shortly. No point in hanging about in the rain! Pete LG99.

 DMU

19th October 1974

19th October 1974 - I braved the torrential rain to take this shot of the Midland Railway's Gloucester Eastgate station looking south with a dmu in the platform. The other end of the covered footbridge joining the two Gloucester stations is in the right background. The goods lines to left have already been lifted. I was waiting for a Southwest to Northeast Class 47-hauled train to take me back to Birmingham. The whole site today is a supermarket. What a surprise! Pete LG99.

 DMU

31st July 1979

Set: B805

Refurbished Class 101 Metro-Cammel unit B805 (50329-59122-50304) forming a Cheltenham-Swindon service leaving Gloucester on Tuesday 31st July 1979. It is plainly evident here why the white and blue band livery for refurbished DMUs was a short-lived concept and application, it proving impossible to maintain them in a presentable condition. This particular unit, presumably one of the earlier ones to be so painted, was noted during the following April wearing the BR standard blue and grey livery. Gordon Edgar.
