A Huddersfield to Sheffield three-car unit Class 110 DMU rumbles across the pointwork at Huddersfield Junction, Penistone, on the afternoon of Wednesday 15th October 1980. Note the classic Woodhead-era colour light signal. A staggering amount of infrastructure has gone here since the 1980s. Andrew Walker.

 DMU

24th December 1980

Seen from the embankment above Penistone station, a two car refurbished Class 108 DMU slows for its stop on a Sheffield-Huddersfield service on Christmas Eve, 1980. At this stage the Sheffield and Huddersfield trains were still going through the time-consuming reversal at Nunnery to access Sheffield's Midland station, prior to the re-routing of the service via Barnsley which was still over two years away. The Woodhead overhead line inspection train is stabled in the sidings behind. There would be no more Christmas Eves for the Woodhead route. Andrew Walker.

The lines to the right are the closed Woodhead route, the unit would have travelled via the now closed line from Sheffield Victoria. The present Huddersfield Sheffield service is routed from Penistone via Barnsley and Meadowhall. It is a lot more frequent than the occasional service then. John Carter.

 DMU

November 1984

A Huddersfield to Sheffield service gets away from Penistone station on a misty November day in 1984. The train will join the former Woodhead route more or less at the end of the platform and diverge from it to gain the Barnsley route a couple of miles or so down the line at the site of West Silkstone Junction, where the electrification would once have continued on to Wath. In this view the Woodhead route gantries can still be seen, though the wires are down. Tracks were still in situ from here to Dunford Bridge at this time, and would remain for a couple more years. Andrew Walker.
