A three-car Pressed Steel Suburban DMU formed of cars W51373, W59486 & W51415, was stood at Dawlish station with an 'all-stations' Paignton to Exeter St Davids service on May 28th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.
While on holiday in South Devon in 1987 we noted this Class 118 DMU with set number P460 several times. Here it is departing Dawlish on 3 July 1987 working the 11.06 Paignton-Exeter St Davids. The unit was very distinctive in its yellow livery advertising British Telecom. The individual cars were 51317 / 59469 / 51302. Lewis Bevan.

The photographer left it a tad too late to take the shot resulting in some blurring on the cab so the set number is not clear but the marks on the cab front match 52063 in set P956. A Class 101 DMU formed of two DMBSs seen at Dawlish Warren with the 16:03 Paignton-Exmouth service on 5 March 1988. Although no set number is visible the slide notes it as P861 and the closest vehicle does seem to be 51205 which fits. Stuart Mackay Collection.

On a warm Spring evening, a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51219 leading, was departing from Dawlish with an all-stations 18.23 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. This was the period when following the banishment of almost new Class 142 Skipper units to the North, still serviceable first generation DMU sets were drafted in to the West Country to keep services running, prior to the appearance of Class 150/2 and Class 155 Sprinter units. Once a resident of Newton Heath Depot, A Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars W51939 & W52063 had found a new home in the West Country, as Plymouth Laira set 956. The unit was getting underway from Dawlish with a well patronised Exmouth to Paignton service on June 2nd 1989. The unit along with other first generation sets had been transferred to the West Country for use in Devon & Cornwall following the banishment of the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North. A tidy looking three-car Class 101 DMU leaning into the curve as it departed from Dawlish with the 18.20 Exeter St Davids to Newton Abbot (all stations) service on a glorious Saturday evening, May 26th 1990. W51500 leads, the TBS should be W59093 and an unknown DMBS on the rear. This set was one of many Class 101 & 108 units sent to the West Country as a stop-gap following the transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North in 1988, and before the transfer of almost new Class 150/2 Sprinter units in 1992. On fine Spring evening, Plymouth Laira allocated Metro-Cammell Class 101 set number 827 formed of cars 53212, 59130 & 51223, was departing from the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren whilst working the 20.04 Exeter Central to Paignton all stations service (2C04) on June 1st 1990. Martyn Hilbert.
