A 3-car BRCW unit from Sheffield climbs the incline out of Barnsley and heads for Penistone and Huddersfield in July 1983. The gasometer in the distance has been gone for many years now. Andrew Walker.

A Huddersfield to Sheffield Class 110 DMU coasts down grade towards Barnsley station on 15th July 1983. Waiting for the right-away at signal BY9 beyond is a Wath to Dodworth empty mgr working with Class 31 no. 31131 and Class 37 no. 37245 in charge. Andrew Walker.

The driver will be braking on the sharply curved and steep descent as this early evening Sheffield-bound DMU from Huddersfield approaches Barnsley in the summer of 1983 (July 15). This deep cutting has since been substantially de-forested. Andrew Walker.

A two-car Sheffield to Leeds Class 114 DMU trundles over Jumble Lane level crossing and into Barnsley station in January 1984. The DMBS is easily recognisable as E50001 by the lower than normal destination indicator. Andrew Walker.

A Huddersfield-bound Metro-Cammell class 101 DMU runs into Barnsley station in June 1984. All has changed with the building of the Barnsley Interchange in 2007 and in more recent years, the multi-storey car parks have also gone, as has the level crossing. Kevin Lane Collection.

Captured with a Minolta compact camera and hence somewhat wide-angled in perspective, a Sheffield service waits to leave Barnsley in 1986 formed of a Met-Camm DMU. Another Met-Camm is stabled in the sidings by the signalbox. Andrew Walker.

11th July 1987
A Sheffield-Huddersfield via Barnsley sevice formed of a class 108/101 hybrid dmu, passes the site of the once extensive Barnsley Junction just East of Penistone on the 11th July 1987. Once part of the Woodhead Route, the trackbed to the right with a few gantries left was the mainline through Deepcar to Sheffield, which remained in use until 15th May 1983 when the Sheffield-Huddersfield trains were diverted via Barnsley. The last electrically hauled train passed through here just before 5am on the 18th July 1981 and was the 6M10 Harwich-Trafford Park Speedlink hauled by 76010 and 76016. Andrew J Crowther.

1988
DMBS 51455 calls at Barnsley with the 11:10 Sheffield - Leeds in 1988, presumably paired with 51538. It appears to have been recently transferred from Scotland, it having the remnants of a 101xxx TOPS unit number visible below the driver's front window, plus it appears to have had some lettering painted out behind the driver's door, probably TransClyde or ScotRail. A Sheffield-Leeds DMU approaches Barnsley station on 15th August 1988. The era of the DMUs was fast drawing to a close at this time, the Class 101 was formed of E51524 + E51454. Andrew Walker.
