 DMU

31st August 1973

The remains of Class 126 DMS Sc51011 are recovered at Bellahouston on 31 August 1973. It had been struck by an EMU the previous evening while working the 9:10pm Ayr – Glasgow Central service, the rear car of the DMU ending on top of the EMU (seen behind the cranes) which then caught fire. Unknown Newspaper.

Class 107 (set 134, Sc52013) at Houston in December 1980. Living in Paisley at the time I took a day out one Saturday to film the Ayr (formerly Hamilton based) Derbys as we called them on the Paisley Canal line and Kilmacolm branch. Why I did this in December and not when the weather was better I'll never know! Alistair Ness.

Why I did this in December and not when the weather was better I'll never know! Leaving everything to the last minute I suppose. Alistair Ness.

January 1981

Set: 140

Derby Heavyweight Set 140 pulls away from a rural Houston and Crosslee station on a Kilmacolm working from Glasgow Central. The nearby town of Linwood, developed as post war overspill for Glasgow and Paisley along with the Rootes Car Factory, was poorly situated despite its proximity. The passengers here seem to be heading for nearby Brookfield to the south, accessed by a parallel footpath (to the left of the photograph) and footbridge well beyond the station. The villages of Houston and Crosslee were somewhat remote from the station and were over a mile away to the north. Note the 'running in board' rusting away on the left and the line of cast iron lamp posts - probably gas lights in a previous age! January 1981. alicia hartman.

The Last Summer. Derby Heavyweight DMU drifts into Houston and Crosslee on a summer afternoon. 107 431 is working a Kilmacolm to Glasgow Central service. No sign of any impending custom but the train did deposit several children on their way home from schoool. Monday 14 June 1982. alicia hartman.

The Last Summer. Derby 107 431 (with 101 TS) on a Kilmacolm - Glasgow service, departs Houston and Crosslee station for Cart Junction. The Kilmacolm passenger siding doubled at Cart Junction in advance of the junctions to the mainline at Elderslie No.1 and No.2. Monday 14 June 1982. alicia hartman.

The Last Summer. Derby 107 431 departs Houston and Crosslee for Glasgow Central on a working from Kilmacolm. The Railscot website suggests the line was singled in 1973. Linwood, in the distance, was inconveniently sited for the station and trains simply sped past en route to Paisley Canal. Monday 14 June 1982. alicia hartman.

"It's a sair fecht". A sea of mud welcomes this tenacious lady to Houston in January 1983. Behind 107 435 (presumably 51996) is working a service on the last days of the Kilmacolm line. Alistair Ness.

Last Days. Mixed 105 376 (105-107-107) rolls into Houston and Crosslee station. A view from Barochan Road and a solitary passenger awaits the returning Kilmacolm to Glasgow service, Friday 07 January 1983. One wonders if they knew there would be no trains on Monday? There were nearby road signs for a local hospital, which may have been Merchiston House, behind the trees on the left. alicia hartman.

Last Days. An afternoon Glasgow Central - Kilmacolm service with mixed 105 376 (Class 105 / 107) is heading west from Houston and Crosslee. The train has passed under Sandholes Road and is heading towards the Lochermill Viaduct thence Bridge of Weir. An old notebook suggests this is probably Cravens DMBS E51493 + Derby TSL Sc59790 + Derby DMBS Sc52004 which was used on Kilmacolm services earlier that week on 04 January. The outskirts of Bridge of Weir are visible in the distance, above the train. It is still possible to travel along here - but on a bicycle on the National Cycle Network! Probably Friday 07 January 1983. alicia hartman.

8th January 1983

Set: 107435

On the last day of Kilmacolm services - 8 January 1983 - hybrid DMU set 107435 (presumably with 51996 closest) is seen at Houston with a mid-morning service. This line, the last closure in Scotland which would never happen today, fell because of squabbling between District Council, Regional Authority and PTE funding. Alistair Ness.

Last Day No.10. Looking west as Cravens triple 105373 enjoys some winter sunshine. It is powering towards Houston and Crosslee station on the 12:01 Kilmacolm - Glasgow Central service. An old notebook suggests this was DMBS E50384 + DMBS E51301 + DTSL E56464 (nearest camera). Sandholes Road crosses the railway in the background and Brookfield is to the left. Saturday 08 January 1983. alicia hartman.

Last Day No.12. Looking east and Cravens 105 373 has deposited some passengers, perhaps more so than usual, at Houston and Crosslee station. It is pulling away for the mainline at Elderslie on the 12:01 Kilmacolm - Glasgow Central service. The double fence to the left was a footpath connecting nearby Brookfield and the station via a footbridge, from which the photograph was taken. Saturday 08 January 1983 alicia hartman.
