W50686 is leading this service for Hereford, it has run from Snow Hill and is picking up the Stourbridge Line at Smethwick west Junction, circa 1966. The line which the train has used was closed to passenger trains when Snow Hill closed but remained in use for freight, when the Jewellery line opened passengers returned once again. The train is approaching Smethwick West station, the station was replaced just after the Jewellery line opened by the more convenient interchange station at Smethwick Galton Bridge. To the right of the signal box the tunnel to Galton Junction can be seen, also on the right a ladder is against the signal box at an insane angle. Above the train is the top of a blast furnace, a very common sight back then but nearly extinct now. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith.
