DMU Depots

Leith Central

Leith Central(ScR)unknowntoNov-59
64H(ScR)Nov-59toApr-72

The depot had 390 different vehicles allocated to it of types Class 100, Class 101, Class 105, Class 107, Class 108, Class 116, Class 120, Class 122, Class 126, AC Cars Railbus, Bristol/ECW Railbus, Derby Lightweight, Park Royal Railbus, Wickham Railbus, Swindon 79xxx series.

Although early ScR arrivals (the Met-Camm Lightweight, Swindon Inter-Cities and GRC&W twins) were allocated to 64A St Margarets this was just a 'paper' allocation as all maintenace and stabling was done at Leith Central.

The transfer date of these vehicles to Leith Central is unknown but estimated to be circa summer 1958.

The depot closed around the time of the replacement of the Swindon DMUs on the E&G services by Class 27s and Haymarket became the DMU depot for the city.

During the mid-1960s some of the drivers learned the road to Callander and Balquhidder as there was a brief plan to introduce DMUs on a service from Edinburgh to Callander. They took the DMUs up to Balquhidder before returning - Balquhidder had a turntable so route learning to there was required in case a steam engine substitution service was needed. Sadly Callander's loss was Dunblane's gain as the DMU's turned at Dunblane instead of Callander.
