Class 116 DMU at London Paddington

December 1975

Set number: L340

BR (Derby) Class 130 Motor Parcels 3-car dmu No.L340 consisting of conversions from a Class 116/1 Motor Second and a Class 116/2 Motor Brake Second (closest, presumably W50819) from a 3-car suburban set with, marshalled in between, an ex-loco-hauled GUV parcels van with multiple unit fittings. The set is in Rail Blue with all yellow front ends and "Parcels Service" branding. It is seen departing Paddington, 12/75. Hugh Llewelyn.

Class 116 DMU at West Ealing

1st July 1976

Leading a parcels train past West Ealing class 116 50819 on 1st July 1976. Ian Buck.

Class 116 DMU at Washwood Heath

June 1978

Set number: TS545

Class 116 set TS545 (presumably 50819 + 59346 + 50915, the power cars converted back to passenger use after being in parcel service on the Western Region) seen at Washwood Heath in June 1978. Michael Mensing.

Class 116 DMU at Bewdley

Unknown date

Set number: TS545

Tyseley Class 116 set TS545, led by DMBS M50819 (and presumably with 59346 + 50915) is seen heading for Kidderminster in Refurbished Livery of white with blue band, late 1970s / early 1980s. At the time BR ran some through services over the SVR from New Street on bank holidays. Graeme Phillips Collection.

The vehicle is mentioned in the following images:

DMU

Date: circa 1967

A GRC&W parcel car (55991 or 55992) in early blue livery with only a yellow gangway cover at Oxford circa 1967. It is paired with a Derby suburban DMBS still in green - likely to 50819 or 50862 which had their seats removed for parcel traffic - and there are two vans in tow. Doug Nicholls.

DMU

Date: circa 1968

A fascinating picture of an unidentified Gloucester Class 128 (possibly W55991) carrying what appears to be non-standard blue livery with white cab roofs and seemingly without yellow warning panels, although the reality is the van has a yellow painted corridor connection. The DMPV is working with an unidentified green liveried Derby Class 116 DMBS (probably 50819 or 50862), the pair pulling a BR(SR) green liveried CCT at Twyford and thought to be heading east - c.1968. 53A Models of Hull Collection.

DMU

Date: unknown

Set number: 345

One of the Western Region hybrid 128/130 sets (number 345) formed of W55992 and either 50819 or 50862, with two 'Fruit D' vans in tow. This appears to be Slough, date unknown. Graham Clark.

DMU

Date: 7th July 1978

Set number: TS511

M50915 leads set TS511 on Hatton Bank, July 7th 1978. The DMBS should be M50819, the vehicles had recently been converted back to passenger use after a decade carrying parcels. Michael Mensing.

DMU

Date: 8th March 1986

Set number: TS545

A few miles to the south-west of Langley Green is the station at Rowley Regis. By the time this photograph was taken on 8 March 1986, freight traffic to the various industrial termini hereabouts had finished, but the trackwork and and signalling were still pretty much intact. This picture shows the inevitable class 116 DMU (TS545, presumably 50915 + 59346 + 50819) on a Birmingham New Street to Stourbridge Junction stopping train approaching the station. Peter Tandy.
