A. Railcar Service.   (Contd.)

(2)  Failures.  The arrangements for close liason between local M.P. and B.U.T. representatives agreed as noted in Part 1 (iii) were explained to Mr.Ellis.

(3)  Operating Instructions.  Mr.Ellis was supplied with copies of the temporary instructions which have been issued. He agreed to scrutinise them and suggest any revisions which B.U.T. consider are needed to ensure satisfactory operation of their power equipments. During the discussion it was revealed that tail traffic was being handled in the Cumberland district and Mr.Harvey undertook to issue instructions to the effect that such traffic should not be handled by diesel trains unless agreement has been received from the C.M.&E.E. concerned. Mr.Ellis will deal through Mr.Harrison with any points which may arise regarding operating instructions in relation to the power equipments.

(4)  Advice of date to Service.  The usual railway procedure will be followed and the B.U.T. will be advised by the appropriate C.M.& E.E. of release dates of cars built in railway shops. B.U.T. will make their own arrangements in respect of cars built by Contractors.

(5)  Service Literature.  Arrangements made in respect of maintenance and operating instructions referred to in (1) and (3) above are applicable, and Mr.Ellis will arrange co-operation accordingly.

(6)  Liason between Railways and Contractors.  Mr. Ellis was advised of the arrangements made for regular monthly meeting as referred to in Part 1(ii).

(7)  Training of Staff.  The training available to railway staff in B.U.T. Workshops was appreciated and it was agreed that Mr.Harvey would pursue this aspect with the Motive Power Superintendents with a view to increading the number of men receiving such training with particular emphasis on ensuring that such men has received their training before the services they would operate had commenced. It was also agreed that a period of training in the Carriage & Wagon Dept. on the construction of the trains was desirable and Mr.Randle can arrange accordingly.

(8)  Preparation of Maintenance Schedules and Operating Instructions.  The arrangements made in respect of paragraphs (1) and (3) above are applicable and Mr.Ellis will co-operate accordingly.

B. DESIGN AND PRODUCTION.

(1)  Liason between Railways and Contractors.  It was agreed that the closest liason must exist between the vehicle builders, power equipment suppliers and operators. The regular monthly meetings already referred to in paragraph (A)(6) will ensure such liason, but it was essential that the various contractors should incorporate any modifications which experience showed to be necessary and arrangements will be made accordingly.
