Class 116 DMS 53909, formerly of Cardiff division set formation C316, complete with Welsh dragon symbol on cab front, is seen in what was then platform 11 (now platform 9) of Newcastle station on 24/09/1987. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Recently transferred from Scotland, set 101322 consisting of SC53159 + SC59069 + SC51250 at Newcastle on 1/10/87, receiving attention from fitters. Unusually, the leading vehicle retains the top marker light above the destination blind - these were usually removed upon refurbishment in late 1970s / early 1980s. Graeme Phillips Collection.
DMS E53169 is seen in what was then Newcastle platform 11, with Brough on its destination blind, on 2/10/87. Below the driver's window can be seen the letters BG, the depot code for Hull Botanic Gardens, which at the time maintained a fleet of DMUs for East Yorkshire. In most cases, the top and bottom centre lights were smoothed away without a trace upon refurbishment, but this cab front exhibits the welded plates. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 116 DMS 53900 in Newcastle station on 13 October 1987. It carries Valley Train markings and set number C313 from its previous allocation to Cardiff, it moved to the north-east to cover for Pacer problems. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 143 and 101 DMU in Newcastle station, November 1987. Class 143 unit 143004 consisted of cars 55645 55670, plus an unidentified Class 101 are seen in what were then platforms 7 and 6 respectively. 143004 was renumbered to 143604 two years later, and platform 7, in which it is standing, became platform 1. Graeme Phillips Collection.
M54247 and M53964 at Newcastle, 09/11/1987. Based at Carlisle Kingmoor depot at the time, they have evidently travelled across the Tyne Valley, perhaps due to the failure of a Heaton (HT) unit, which would usually work these services. Upon closure of Kingmoor in May 1988, most of the Class 108s were transferred to Heaton for continued use in Cumbria, but M53964 M54247 were amongst the remainder which went to Chester (CH) depot for north Lancashire services. However, M53964 M54247 was later transferred to Heaton in Spring 1989, from which time it made semi-regular appearances at Newcastle. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Class 118 DMU at Newcastle on 13/11/1987. DMS 51323 illustrates WM (West Midlands PTE) logo and red triangle across the cab front (minus the Welsh dragon that would usually accompany this). The car behind appears to be a class 101 TBS(L), and TransPennine coach TSO(L) 5396 forms the backdrop. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Away from its usual area are cars SC51249 SC59542 SC53146 (101 321) in Strathclyde PTE livery. Although Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle, received some varied DMUs in Autumn 1987, these cars were never allocated there, so it was probably en route for works attention. Indeed, I photographed this unit at Glasgow in 1990. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Cars 51323 59475 53220 are seen about to enter Newcastle station - the first two are Class 118s, 53220 just visible at the rear was Class 101. Having recently transferred from South Wales, leading car 51323 carries the red chevron, which was usually accompanied by a red dragon, but the latter has evidently been painted out. 20/01/1988. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Departmental Class cars 975664 975637 (formerly cars 51122 56300) catch the early morning sunlight in what was then Newcastle platform 6 on 17/02/1988. This was the Eastern Region's 'Stourton Saloon', re-liveried by Ilford depot in 1985 in the two-tone blue scheme then being applied to the Provincial Sector's new railbuses (Classes 142 / 143). The destination blind has also been removed from above the centre cab front window. Behind in platform 4 are InterCity Sleeper coaches, which were axed from the East Coast Main Line shortly afterwards from the May 1988 timetable change. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 101 twin set 51804+51445 at Newcastle Central on the 5th April 1988. Kevin Law.
An unidentified Class 101 2-car DMU (still carrying a Norwich set number) approaching Newcastle Central from Manors from Castle 15-4-88. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Departmental cars 975349 975539 (formerly 51116 56101) pass through the centre roads of Newcastle station on 21/04/1988. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 101 cars E53263 E51216 make a smokey departure from what was then Newcastle platform 5 with a local service to Durham, 02/06/1988. To the left is an HST power car, which must have been an early recipient of the updated 'Swallow' version of InterCity livery. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Class 108 set (54243 + 53959) awaits departure from Newcastle platform 9 with the 17:33 Newcastle - Hexham, 03/06/1988. Graeme Phillips Collection.
53959 + 54243 arrive at Newcastle on 22/06/1988 with a service from the Tyne Valley. This was one of the majority of Class 108s transferred from Kingmoor (KD) depot, Carlisle, to Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle, in May 1988, upon closure of the former. They were still intended for work in Cumbria, but, being based in the north-east, made frequent appearances in the region, especially certain generously timed Carlisle-Newcastle services, presumably to allow them to come to their home depot for maintenance. They finished working in Cumbria in November 1991, replaced by then newly converted Class 153 single car Sprinters. Graeme Phillips Collection.
53954 in Newcastle station on 21/3/89. John Carter.
Class 101 51203 is seen at Newcastle Central on 26.03.1989 in the company of newer dmus 142022 and 143018. Andy Cole.
54262 and 53955 awaiting departure at Newcastle with the 17:24 Newcastle - Hexham on Wednesday 23rd August 1989. The Heaton (HT) depot sticker, depicting the Tyne bridge, is clearly visible below the car number, which by this time has no regional prefix. This rush hour service was cancelled more often than not, probably due to lack of train unit, resulting in the 1715 Newcastle-Girvan (a ScotRail Class 156) being delayed to depart at 1724 and having to call at stations to Hexham. Graeme Phillips.
Class 108 vehicles 53953 and 54242 depart Newcastle for a trip up the ECML with the 17:45 to Morpeth on Wednesday 23/8/89. In the background, platform construction work is underway, including the outer island platform, which was initially numbered 15 and 16 when opened for local services in 1989. All the platforms were renumbered soon afterwards, the outer island becoming platforms 5, 6, 7 and 8, and the platform from which this photograph was taken renumbered from 8 to 2. Graeme Phillips.
