A driver trainee at the controls of a Met-Camm Lightweight unit circa October 1956. He was on the second week of a course at a newly opened Eastern Region school at St Ronans, Hadley Wood, which taught steam locomotive drivers in diesel techniques. The small white board in front of him has the speed ranges for each gear. At the time there were just 55 units on the Region (Derby Lightweights and Met-Camm Lightweights) based at Lincoln, Norwich and Stratford. The school was opened to prepare and train drivers in readiness for the extension of diesel-operated services. British Railways.

The heater ducting under the table is for a Smiths heater on the left and steam heating on the right. Through the door at the far end was a Lister generator for power. British Railways.
