Diesel multiple units (a Class 114 on the left, Class 120 on the right) stand in the former Midand Railway station at Lincoln St Marks on 31st May 1978 still fully semaphore signalled and complete with classic MR signal box. We had arrived on the 114 which is now signalled to return to Newark. Transfer between the two platforms was via a boarded crossing so despite appearances I am not in a position of danger! Through freight trains still ran beyond the High Street level crossing behind the camera. Opened in 1846 and closed in 1985, today St Marks is a shopping centre and although the station building has been incorporated into the complex little evidence of the railway's presence remains. The Midland Railway station in Lincoln was St Marks, where a Swindon dmu is preparing to depart westwards from platform 1 with a three car train on 31st May 1978. Traffic on the level crossing can be seen in the right background. The line used to connect with the Great Northern line at Durham Ox Junction east of Central Station. Opened in 1846 the station closed completely in May 1985 when a new passenger line was opened between the Midland route & the Great Northern line into Lincoln Central station. This greatly relieved the traffic congestion in the city along High Street. However with the opening of a shopping complex on the site in the 1990s no doubt the traffic is even worse now. At least the main station building was not demolished but incorprated into this complex. Pete LG99.

A Class 114 at Lincoln Central. This fleet of 49 power + trailer 2-car units was for many years allocated to Lincoln (LN) depot for medium-distance services across a wide area of eastern England, extending deep into Yorkshire and down to destinations such as Peterborough. Along with the Derby (DY) based Class 120s - which worked many Cross-Country routes across central England - they were largely replaced from the mid-1980s by Class 150/1 Sprinters. This shot illustrates the white and blue DMU Refurbished livery which was applied between 1975 and 1979. This image will have been taken in the late 1970s (though early 1980s is possible).
