105 DMU

23rd June 1979

A pair of Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin DMU's were forming a Manchester Victoria to Kirkby service awaiting departure from Bolton on an overcast June 23rd 1979. Bringing up the rear complete with its paraffin tail-lamp was Driving Motor Brake Second M50771. The Power-Twin fleet were a familiar sight around Greater Manchester and Lancashire at the time, and the Preston to Colne service was virtually monopolised by these distinctive machines. A ride on a Power-Twin was an experience never to be forgotten. Pale green formica interiors, curvy-backed seats, and every imaginable metal item from the luggage racks, window frames and door surrounds would vibrate to various degrees depending on the engine speed. They had comfortable seating and a smell of warm diesel throughout each car. They were though to be quite rough and ready at the time, well-worn, but far superior to what was to follow, that promised so much (Class 142 Pacers). Martyn Hilbert.

Very much the daily routine at the time, a Cravens Class 105 2-Car Power-Twin DMU with DMBS M50771 trailing, departs from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on August 23rd 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

Almost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. In the foreground the old L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970's Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement! The Newton Heath based Cravens Power-Twin sets, dominated the services along the East Lancashire Line during the 1970's. Martyn Hilbert.

31st May 1980

On a rather overcast May 31st 1980, Cravens Class 105 Motor Brake Second M50772 leads a service for Wigan Wallgate at Kirkby. Beyond the stop block on the other side of Glovers Brow bridge is 507025 awaiting the return journey to Liverpool Central. Kirkby had been a through station on the former L&Y main line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria, but when the line was electrified from Walton Junction in 1978, the station at Kirkby was altered in a similar fashion to the layout at Ormskirk. A single line split into two halves separated by stop blocks with the electrics and diesel services terminating in the same platform. In this view the trackbed and the disused platform of this former double track railway are clearly visible, complete with maroon & cream gas lamp post. Martyn Hilbert.

A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50772 at the rear, was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on May 15th 1981. The Newton Heath allocated Power-Twin sets were once synonymous with the ex L&Y lines in Lancashire and were regular performers on the East Lancashire route from Preston to Colne. Just visible in the distance is the brick bridge that takes the M6 Motorway across the railway. The bridge was the first to carry a Motorway across a railway in the UK, with the M6 Preston By-Pass between Bamber Bridge (now junction 29) and Broughton (now junction 32) that opened in December 1958. The aftermath of a three-car Cravens DMU working the 13:00 Birmingham-Derby service hitting a trailer loading with 2 1/2 tons of manure at Catholme crossing (at Wichnor Junction on the Birmingham to Derby main line) on 15 February 1969. The three vehicles came to rest forming a triangle, M50774 closest, M59322 left to right behind, and the mangled wreckage of M50799 (which looks like it was in blue with a yellow panel) on the left. All were withdrawn after the incident. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A poor-quality 'snap' taken from a passing northbound express at Catholme crossing on 18.04.69, where a three-car Cravens set collided with a farm tractor and trailer there some two months previously on 15.02.69. This shows the remains of a power car which should be 50774 since 50799 suffered extensive front end damage in the collision. Leonard Rogers.

Cravens power cars 50813 (left) and 50775 (right) at Ipswich shed. Date unknown, but both were withdrawn in May 1969, and as 50775 is missing a cab door and some sliding lights this was probably taken late 1969 / early 1970s. Tony Wilkins.

A failed DMU gets a helping hand from 55 002 THE KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY on April 25th 1981. The Deltic had arrived with the "North Briton" railtour from York via Carlisle, so the watching enthusiasts were able to enjoy the sight of KOYLI indulging in a bit of shunting before returning south. 27th May 1972

A Cravens DMU calls at Stubbins on its way from Bury Bolton Street to Rawtenstall on 27 May 1972. M50782 is closest, the other car is thought to be M50815 labelled set NH135. These Newton Heath allocated twin power-car Class 105 sets were the mainstay of branch services for many years, sometimes substituted by Derby 108 units. The rails of the closed Accrington line can just be seen beyond the platform. This line climbed steeply alongside the Rawtenstall and Bacup line for some distance before swinging to the North West and away from the Irwell Valley towards Helmshore. 27th May 1972

The closure notices are posted and it is the last week of services on the Rawtenstall branch. A Newton Heath Cravens twin power-car DMU (M50782 and likely M50815 labelled set NH135) approaches Ewood Bridge and Edenfield from Rawtenstall on a Bury Bolton Street service on 27 May 1972. The distant signal (fixed) is for Townsend Fold level crossing just south of Rawtenstall. The line had been singled two years previously and the slew from Up to Down line can be seen behind the train. Image courtesy of Mark Bartlett. WA Camwell Collection.

Set: NH135

A Cravens DMU pulls into Ewood Bridge on 27 May 1972, one week before closure, on a Bury Bolton Street service with Alf Davenport in the driving seat. When the line between Bury and Rawtenstall was singled three signal boxes remained to control level crossings but the distant signals for these became fixed and Alf was not impressed. "If a man needs a fixed distant he shouldn't be on the railway" he would say. Fair point Alf - proud of his craft to the end, even on this very run down shadow of a former main line. DMBS M50782 is closest, the DMCL is thought to be M50815 labelled NH135. Image courtesy of Mark Bartlett. WA Camwell Collection.
