Weak winter sun barely lights Met Camm set 199 (50144 leads) as it departs from Cupar forming 2L36 1125 Edinburgh to Dundee on 29th November 1980. The goods yard is still intact at this point complete with provender goods shed and a couple of 12t vans. The town was formerly the county town of Fife and the agricultural nature of the surrounding district, together with the nearby sugar beet factory, would have brought much freight traffic to the station. As with much of the network, the freight facility has given way to the inevitable carpark although at least the signal box and it's semaphores still control the station. Bruce Galloway.
Metro-Cammell 3 car set 222 arrives at Markinch on 29th November 1980 with 2L32, the 0925 Edinburgh to Dundee stopping service. Behind the unit can be seen A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' which would be trialled in the yard prior to working an excursion. Bruce Galloway.

Metro Cammell Set 177 with Ayr Depot sticker at the stops as part of a six car set at Largs station in December 1980. Platform 1 is to the very left whilst Platform 3 is on the right. The sign hanging adjacent to the 'Platform 2' probably faces drivers warning them to stop here due to the impending platform ramp. Note the passenger luggage trollies on the platform - perhaps put to good use in summer months with holiday makers bound for the Isle of Cumbrae and Millport! The lattice footbridge in the background merely crossed the station and there was no access to or from the platforms. alicia hartman.
Largs Station on a very dreich day, December 1980 and Metro Cammell 101 units at Platform 2. The DMU at the stops is probably Set 177. Platform 3 is in the foreground and both are still extant (but re-numbered). However, the then Platform 1 did not survive rationalisation during electrification. The brick station building beyond the buffer stops did survive electrification but was demolished later by an errant ECS Class 318 EMU one morning in July 1995. A replacement station building was eventually constructed behind the DMU on Platform 2. The station canopies also survived electrification but are now long gone. alicia hartman.

The 1255 Darlington-Hartlepool seen at Hartburn Junction, Stockton, on 18/12/1980. The trailer is 56391, the power car may be E50259. John Carter.
Met-Cam 3 car set B803 (W51450, presumably with 59546 + 51522) stands on Godfrey Road Sidings, Newport, 29 December 1980. Paul James.
On 29-12-1980 E50259 + E56381 are seen with the 1115 Saltburn - Darlington service at South Bank. South Bank station was demolished and a new station built slightly nearer to Middlesbrough, the much simplified trackwork now gives no hint of this stations existence. John Carter.
On 30-12-1980 E50180 is seen beside the turntable at Darlington, still in use for turning individual DMU vehicles then, and remained in place for may more years.. I made more generous notes on my photos then, so for those interested, the vans to the right are S1702, S94531, S1838 which had been condemned at Darlington after a shunting mishap. John Carter.
E51496 + E51431 with the 1322 Sheffield-Huddersfield at Huddersfield Junction, Penistone, on 30-12-1980. The lines to the right are the closed Woodhead route, the unit would have travelled via the now closed line from Sheffield Victoria. The present Huddersfield Sheffield service is routed from Penistone via Barnsley and Meadowhall. It is a lot more frequent than the occasional service then. John Carter.
