Set: EP527

M53703, a Chester allocated Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU of set EP527, now converted to parcels use, at Crewe on the 5th March 1988. The Red Star parcels branding can just be seen down the side. Andrew J Crowther.

Set: S944

A Class 108 Derby Lightweight DMU waits under the bay canopies at Crewe on 10th March 1988. M51931 is the leading car. Syd Young.

Many stored Met-Camm vehicles and a couple of suburban cars at Crewe Carriage Sidings on 26 March 1988. The only identifiable vehicle is E54375 on the right, it's allocation on this date being as Newton Heath stored unserviceable, it would be reinstated a few weeks later but back in store by the end of the year. Redundant DMU cars, mostly Met-Cam Class 101's including 54375 on the right and some un-gangwayed suburban vehicles, sit awaiting their fate in the carriage sidings, just south of Crewe station on 28th March 1988. Paul James.

2nd April 1988

Set: 510

Chester allocated Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU set 510 comprising of cars M53713 & M53703 at Crewe on the 2nd April 1988. Now converted to parcels use, the Red Star parcels branding can just be seen down the side. By this time these units were thin on the ground and all had been withdrawn before the year was out. The new generation of DMU in the shape of 150 124 can be seen along side on a Derby service. Andrew J Crowther.

The slide is noted as capturing 51324 at Crewe DTMD on 30 April 1988. The vehicle had been withdrawn from Newton Heath the previous month and would be cut at Vic Berry's in May. With the speedo cable removed from the leading bogie and bogie dangling from a crane st the rear it looks like a bogie change is underway. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Set: B973

Carrying Bristol set number B973, this is presumably 54267 + 53629 which were transferred to Cardiff about this time. They sit in platform 6 at Crewe station, having worked up from Hereford with the first service of the day. I had worked it up from Hereford and would work it back all stations to Shrewsbury, where I would stable it in Abbey Foregate sidings. The photo was taken sometime between 2nd and 7th May 1988 as I worked the turn for the week. Paul James.

Set: 916

Now in its second role, but originally built as 4 car units, is this 1959 Derby Suburban now Class 127 DMU, set 916 (55986 + 55976). From new these units were almost exclusively used on the London St Pancras - Bedford services as 4-car units before being displaced in June 1983, in 1985 22 redundant power cars (maost of which had been stored at Carlisle) were rebuilt to form 11 two car parcels units, car A was for Newspapers and car B was for Express Parcels, they lasted in service until 1989. Taken on the 11th June 1988 at Crewe. Andrew J Crowther.

This 1959 Derby Suburban Class 127 DMU vehicle is now in its second role as a parcels unit is set 916 (55976 + 55986). This car 55976 was originally numbered 51625 and was later preserved. Taken at Crewe on the 11th June 1988. Andrew J Crowther.

Class 128 DMPV 55993 is on the rear of a local to Piccadilly departing from platform 1 at Crewe, whilst 37-429 'Eisteddfod Genedlaethol' arrives with the 17-14 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff. 25-6-88. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.

Set: 003

Not the most elegant of railway vehicles, and painting it bright red and yellow definitely draws attention to it's lack of aesthetics. Class 128 Luggage Van 55993 sits under the bay canopies at Crewe on 28th June 1988 after arriving with a Parcels working. Despite it's appearance, it would be nice to see one in service today! A Swansea based Derby Class 108 power twin DMU, set S948 (presumably 53928 + 51565), heads for Crewe with a passenger service on the line from Salop Goods Junction, Crewe, on either the 8th or 9th December 1988. Seen from the cab of 37797, stood at Crewe Bank SB's outer home signal at the head of 6V07, the empty Cawoods service from Ellesmere Port to South Wales. The small LH signal are would eventually be cleared for me to enter the Up Goods Loop at Crewe bank. Paul James.
