Through a floor hatch inside a vehicle can be seen the exhaust, the lighter ribbed pipe at the bottom. Negative WMP7794, circa October 1956, probably taken at the Met-Camm Saltley Works. Rolls Royce.

Underframe details - just above the exhaust silencer is a heater, its air intake is on the right. The two cylinders are the engine air intakes / filters. Under the words 'Flame Switch', the two small cylindrical objects are fuel filters (a CAV type common on most DMUs). Under the builders plate are the engine start / stop buttons with a socket for an inspection light. Negative WMP7797, circa October 1956, probably taken at the Met-Camm Saltley Works. Rolls Royce.

Underframe detail - the fuel pump can be seen mounted on the engine, the pipes from the top running to each of the six injectors. It is directly connected to the throttle motor, which has the four flexible air hoses running into it. Negative WMP7798, circa Oct-1956, probably ay the Met-Camm Saltley Works. Rolls Royce.

Looking through a floor hatch to a final drive mounted on a bogie, the input shaft to the top. The white pipe is one of two air pipes to control forward / reverse, the ribbed pipe is a conduit for the wires which connect to the cab 'air/axle' lights to show the drive has engaged. A Met-Camm image (negative unknown) showing their 250th railcar for British Railways. Sadly the number is not in the frame, but calculations show this maybe E50219, delivered to Sunderland in July 1957. Metropolitan Cammell.

Two 2-car newly completed Met-Camm sets at Saltley ready for delivery on July 26th 1957. The nearest vehicle, DTC E56071, carries displays in the windows noting it is the 250th railcar built for British Railways. The vehicles were destined for Sunderland depot. Metropolitan Cammell.

A hive of activity in the Met-Camm works at Saltley with Class 101 vehicles in various states on construction. One can be identified on the left, DMBS E51221, listed as new to South Gosforth 16/10/58 which dates this to around late September 1958. Note the vehicles are glossed and lined before the windows are fitted. Three stages of roof construction can be seen, assembly, etch priming the alloy panels, and after applying red-oxide primer. Possibly a hand tinted image, it appeared in a Met-Camm publicity brochure. Metropolitan Cammell.
