Complete with their tail lamps, A pair of Newton Heath allocated Class 108's stand in bay platforms 3A & 4A at the south end of Preston Station on March 18th 1974. The unit on the left was being used on services to Ormskirk, whilst the one the right was stabled, although if the destination blind is to be believed it has seen some recent use on the Windermere Branch. Class 108's were the norm on the Ormskirk services at the time. The 108 on the right has set number NH449 in the cab window (and another partially seen behind it), the 108 on the left has 'IL7' in the window - was this a set number? Martyn Hilbert.
Passing at Preston. A Class 104 DMU, arriving at Preston, passes Class 86 electric locomotive No. 86204 at the north end of the station. The DMU has come from Blackpool North despite what it says on the destination blind. Photo taken in July 1975, probably on Saturday 19th. Seeing this photo again, it occurs to me that the 'knitting' north of Preston was still relatively new at the time. Tom Harper.

Following a heavy shower the sun had reappeared as a six-car Calder Valley DMU formation with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory Car E52084 leading, was approaching Preston with a Bradford to Blackpool North service on September 17th 1977. For many years the daily return service between West Yorkshire and Blackpool was the only regular passenger service to travel over the Copy Pit route. The Rolls-Royce engined Class 110 fleet based at Bradford Hammerton Street Depot were subsequently regular visitors to Preston and on busy Summer Saturdays in the early to mid 1970's, a 9-Car lash-up was not uncommon. Martyn Hilbert.
