 DMU

17th August 1979

Set: 68

E50346 at March on a very damp August 17th 1979 in ex works condition with domino style headcode display. After this hasty (and somewhat blurred) photo had been taken, I went down to the platform where further scrutiny revealed a paint date of 29/7/79. It was paired here with a rather less sparkling Cravens trailer, E56114, they were working the 17.10 Cambridge to Peterborough service. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

28th March 1980

Set: 86

This is set 86 comprising E50590, E59221 and at the rear out of frame E50583. The train is the 17.23 Peterborough - Norwich of Friday 28th March 1980 which was pretty much an all stations affair I seem to recall. It is seen arriving at a rather wet March station. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

25th April 1980

Set: 80

Three car BRCW dmu sets were allocated to Norwich for the first time in late 1975. All except one came from Hull Botanic Gardens and were replacements for Metro-Cammell sets which had been gathered by Norwich from 1968 onwards. The Class 104 sets were in pretty poor nick, but here's one which has had some TLC at Doncaster Works. Photographed on April 25th 1980 whilst working the 13.36 Peterborough - Cambridge service, E50578 ended up being part of the last three car set at Norwich. Most of them left in 1980, but this one lasted until February 1981 when it went to Stratford. Refurbished Metro-Cammell triples were their replacements. The BRCW units were numbered 80 - 88 and the refurbished Cammells commenced with set 90. Gerard Fletcher.

Norwich Class 100/105 hybrid set 70 (51127 / 56134) in March station in August 1980. Ian Charles.

 DMU

2nd August 1980

On Saturday August 2nd 1980, the 15.53 Cambridge - Peterborough service is formed of Cambridge allocated Met-Cam E51225 + E56373 when seen at March West Jn. These sets had been refurbished and were normally found on the Cambridge - Royston or Bishop's Stortford shuttles with only occasional forays elsewhere. Gerard Fletcher.

6th September 1980

On 6 September 1980, the Fakenham and Dereham Railway Society GE/GN Joint Freight Lines Railtour ran with a pair Cravens dmu sets. Nearest the camera at March is 56125, then come 51271, 56116 and 51256. Having visited Wisbech, the tour then ran to Sleaford, Bardney, Shirebrook and Lincoln before returning to March. Jeremy Chapter.

Class 105 Cravens Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) E56144 of 1957 heads a four-car train at March on September 6, 1980. Jeremy Chapter.

 DMU

6th September 1980

Set: 54

This four-car dmu formation on September 6, 1980 is headed by a Class 104 Birmingham RC&W Co driving trailer. I think I can identify this as E56187. It carries a Norwich set identity (54) and its partner is a class 105 Cravens vehicle, a 114 is on the back. The train is headed for Doncaster via Spalding, hence the train is crossing off the main (Peterborough) line into a branch platform. It probably originated at Great Yarmouth. This route closed in 1982. The large Whitemoor yard can be seen behind March North Junction signalbox. Jeremy Chapter.

 DMU

3rd December 1980

The low winter sun highlights the puddles at March as the 10.26 Doncaster - Cambridge service pulls in off the joint line from Spalding. Cravens Class 105 E56454 + E51284 was one of nine sets of its type allocated to Lincoln depot often used on these long distance stopping trains. Scan of a print taken with a pocket camera. 3rd December 1980. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

18th January 1981

Withdrawn Gloucester RC&W Class 143 Driving Trailer No E56316 at March TMD on January 18th 1981. It had been withdrawn from Norwich in April 1978 and disposal would be to Snailwell in April 1981. Rob Edwards.

 DMU

17th May 1981

Cravens DMU set 53 on March depot on 17 May 1981. Brian Daniels.

6th July 1981

Set: 51

A class 105 2 car unit arrives at March station with the 1312 service from Cambridge to Peterborough on 6th July 1981, with many class 306 units in the background enroute to scrapping. Bruce Galloway.

 DMU

29th July 1981

Set: 59

E51258 + E56114 depart from March with a Peterborough - Cambridge service on 29/7/81. The locos are 31 297 and 47 203. John Carter.

 DMU

May 1982

A Class 37 hauling a 2-car Cravens dmu which it had rescued after the dmu failed at Crowland, on the now-closed direct line between Spalding and March, in May 1982. Despite the fact the route was in its last months, there were several manned intermediate boxes with crossovers so the Thunderbird had been able to attach to the front of the train. Tony Watson.

 DMU

15th May 1982

Set: 53

The 12.38 Doncaster - Cambridge via the GN/GE joint line leaves March on 15th May 1982 formed of Cravens Class 105 set no. 53 E51277 + E56463. On the rear is Lincoln based Class 114 unit E50016 + E56018 which was in a hybrid livery of old and new refurbished paint schemes. E51277 was to last another three years being withdrawn in May 1985. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

15th May 1982

The northbound lunchtime service over the joint line, the the 13.55 Cambridge - Doncaster is seen arriving at March on 15th May 1982 formed of a Derby Works 3 car dmu E50626 + E59384 + E50636 allocated to Leeds Neville Hill. The set was refurbished later in 1982. It was not uncommon to see sets from Neville Hill and even South Gosforth on the joint line trains, although most of the time the Derby Heavyweight Class 114s and Cravens Class 105 sets held sway. In the background behind the Shenfield units can be seen withdrawn LMR DMUs including a Class 104 centre car and a Cravens. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

15th May 1982

E50636 + E59384 + E50626 at March on 15th May 1982 with the 13.55 Cambridge - Doncaster. There certainly seem to be plenty of passengers, though whether they are boarding or disembarking is unclear. E50636 had had the two character heacode panel plated over, this was a short term fix and at the next major overhaul it would be rebuilt with a flush front. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

17th May 1982

For a time in around 1982 the 17.10 Cambridge - Peterborough local was booked for a Lincoln based dmu set, rather than a Norwich one. Here a hybrid liveried Lincoln Class 114 set with E50010 nearest the camera trailing and E56033 passes Norwood Road on its way to Whittlesea and Peterborough on a rather overcast 17th May 1982. Gerard Fletcher.

 DMU

22nd May 1982

Set: 37

On 22nd May 1982, the 12.40 Doncaster - Cambridge dmu is formed of Cravens Class 105 set no. 37, E50370 + E56457 which had been transferred from Stratford to Norwich three months earlier. It didn't last much longer and was withdrawn in October 1983. There was always an air of desolation about the joint line platforms at weekends without the passage of freights in and out of Whitemoor. Gerard Fletcher.
