 DMU

1959

A Derby suburban triple DMU seen in Handsworth & Smethwick station looking south east towards Snow Hill. Cardiff can just be seen on the destination blind, this is probably one of two sets from the 508xx series transferred from Cathays to Tyseley circa late 1960 which had they two digit headcode panel rather than the four marker lamp arrangement that the other Tyseley sets did. Peter TANDY.

Now known as Handsworth, the Saturday only midday Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level single car leaves Handsworth & Smethwick in 1971. Snow Hill by now had 6 daily deps to Wolverhampton and 4 to Langley Green. 4 tracks are back in place with the Jewellery Line and the Metro. Stephen Burdett.

 DMU

27th May 1972

Three class 116 DMUs combine on this Birmingham New Street to Hereford service as it passes Smethwick West on 27/5/1972. Whilst services in those days were not frequent, I would imagine that this was to move I or 2 of the units to Kidderminster or Worcester. The Rowley Hills can be seen in the distance. Stephen Burdett.

 DMU

2nd October 1982

Set: TS531

A Derby Class 116 trio passes Smethwick Rolfe Street on Saturday 2nd October 1982 with the 14:00 Birmingham New Street to Kidderminster service. Driving Motor Brake 2nd M50052 is the leading car (set TS531, presumably with 59341 + 50914). Why was I at Smethwick Rolfe Street? This was the nearest station to where the Warley Model Railway Club used to hold their annual exhibition prior to it moving to the NEC. At the time Snow Hill was an abandoned wasteland and the prospect of it ever reopening seemed highly unlikely. Fortunately, trains for Kidderminster have reverted to the former Great Western lines within Birmingham and no longer pass through Smethwick Rolfe Street. Brian McDevitt.
