A small part of an official image (ScR Negative 1972/2814) which showed trackwork in progress at Millerhill on 19/10/72. In this small part of the image, behind the stack of track panels, are rows of stored Swindon 79xxx series Inter-City vehicles. There is also a row of Clayton locos on the left. The brake vans suggests the DMU vehicle were loco hauled to the yard. In the second row from the Claytons there are at least eight buffet cars together at this end (identifiable by the large covers over the kitchen ventilator fans). The third row contains just two Swindon vehicles but there is also a Gloucester unit behind. British Rail.

A small part of an official image (ScR Negative 1972/3218) which showed trackwork in progress at Millerhill on 10/11/72. In comparison with the image taken almost a month earlier (https://railcar.co.uk/images/17256) the Claytons have gone but there seems to be no change in the rows of Swindon Inter-City vehicles, and the Gloucester set is still there in the third row. DMU

April 1973

Withdrawn Class 126 units at Millerhill in April 1973 (SC79109 closest). Most of the withdrawn E&G Swindons, which is what we knew them as, ended up stored at Millerhill Yard before being taken south for Scrap. They then hung around in East Anglia for a quite a while as we kept stumbling across them when we were on trips at such unlikely places as Ely and Mistley awaiting devouring by Kings scrapyards in Norwich and Snailwell. Some also went to Swindon for cutting up and sat alongside the Westerns waiting their turn to go. Alistair Ness.

 DMU

28th February 1976

Park Royal Railbus body M79971 Millerhill on 28 February 1976. This former railbus body was in use throughout the 1970s as a staff bothy on the east side of the up yards. Sadly it was too far gone and full of asbestos to be preserved so it was taken to Patterson's Tip in Glasgow and unceremoniously buried in the ground. Alistair Ness.

 DMU

1st May 1977

This Park Royal built Railbus was delivered in 1958 to Bedford depot and numbered M79971. However, just over a year later it was reallocated north to Scotland where it worked for a further 8 years before withdrawal from Eastfield in 1968. The body was then placed alongside Millerhill Yard for use as a staff bothy, modified to include a couple of stoves taken from brake vans hence the two chimneys visible when seen here on 1st May 1977. The 20 year old paint is rapidly fading but shows the original number M79971 which was never given a Sc prefix. It was later removed and buried in Paterson's tip at Mount Vernon due to its blue asbestos content. Murray Liston.

SC51540 was the rear car of the 08.05 Perth to Edinburgh on 31st December 1976 when it caught fire between Winchburgh and Bathgate Junctions. 25072 was sent out to shunt the formation into the loop there, and to haul the leading car - still with passengers aboard - to Waverley almost 2 hours late. 51540 was moved to Millerhill for storage where it is seen on 1st May 1977 with one of the stored class 24s in the distance. It was cut up on site here in early 1978. Murray Liston.
