A four-car formation, which appears to consist of two each of Classes 124 and 123 vehicles, is seen at Mexborough travelling between Sheffield and Doncaster (no doubt as part of a lengthier South Trans-Pennine service) Graeme Phillips Collection.

18th August 1984

A Sheffield-bound DMU has just left Mexborough and is passing the site of Swinton Central station on an August evening in 1984. This section of line is now freight-only following the reinstatement of the Swinton chord enabling trains from Mexborough to reach the Midland main line directly. Above the DMU is the site of Mexborough steam shed and just beyond is where a chord diverged to join the line to Wath. Andrew Walker.

A Class 114 DMU on a Sheffield to Doncaster working is seen here running alongside the canal between Kilnhurst and Mexborough on 24th August 1984, before this service was re-routed to use the re-instated Swinton curve. Andrew Walker.

1st June 1987

A Derby Heavyweight class 114 DMU set is seen crossing Mexborough East Junction with train 2R09 the 09.42 Sheffield Midland to Cleethorpes. The line to the right being the once busy freight route via Wath marshalling yard which lost its importance with the closure of the Woodhead route across the Pennines. Adrian Nicholls.

A Metro-Cammell 2-Car DMU set calls at Mexborough while working 2C18 the 10.08 Sheffield Midland to Hull on 1st June 1987. Adrian Nicholls.

Departmental DMU set ADB977125 ADB977123 accelerate away from Mexborough East Junction while working a drivers route learning special in conjunction with the then newly opened Holmes chord and Rotherham Central station on June 1, 1987. The new line had come into use on a few weeks earlier on 11th May 1987 but passenger crews were still being trained for the new route which no longer passed through Rotherham Masborough station which wasn't ideally situated for the town.
