Class 127 Derby 4-car DMUs

Parcels Use

Initially plans was just for two 2-car units, then increased to cover five parcels workings. The first pair 55970/80 was converted by Newton Heath and appeared in March 1985. The number range used for the first conversions suggested that no more than 10 pairs were envisaged. In the end 22 DMBS's were converted in 1985, many after storage at Carlisle, but also 51591 which had to be reclaimed from the NRM. This had operated laterly in passenger traffic in a retro-green livery in amongst blue vehicles, but it's parcels partner 55967 was painted green to match.

They were formed into 11 2-car sets, initially these were given a single digit set number corresponding to the last digit in the vehicle number, this was changed to a 9xx number. Other number changes were that 51637 / 51606 were initially renumbered as 55988/9 in series with the other vehicles, but were then renumbered as 55968/9. These numbers (and 55987) had previously been used by Class 128 DMPVs, although these particular vehicles had been withdrawn a few years before.

The conversion works done seems to have varied, some seem to only have had the seats removed and windows plated over, some had roller shutters fitted, some went to Carlisle Currock after a few months returned to have these fitted, and the placement of the roller shutters varied!

The sets were allocated to Longsight for maintenance but operated from Newton Heath. All were withdrawn in May 1989, except 55974 (51642) which had been withdrawn in November 1986.
