The final port of call on the 16th September 1979 NREA 'shed bash' was to bag the DMU sets stabled at Rhymney. Viewed from the now demolished island platform, disused for many years, refurbished Derby Works class 116 high density suburban triple set C315 (W50855-W59363-W50908), eventually forming a Cardiff service stands in Rhymney station, in the initial but short-lived white/blue stripe livery with brown underframe. All class 116 units were new to the Western Region and were delivered in 1957-58 and were synonymous with South Wales valley services. Gordon Edgar.

The often-smokey atmosphere of Birmingham New Street is shown to good effect in this rather gloomy shot, with Tyseley's hybrid 4-car suburban set T409 formed class 116 DMS 53894 (nearest) with out of sight 59367 (class 116 TC), 59600 (class 127 TSL) & 51860 (class 115 DMBS) adding it's contribution on 26/Jul/1991. Many of the Tyseley suburban sets contained class 127 centre trailers which were gangwayed, refurbished and painted blue/grey for the first time in their lives when the St.Pancras - Bedford line was electrified. This saw the class 127 power cars withdrawn, with some being converted for parcels use, and the trailers sent north to the West Midlands for another 10 years' use and becoming the longest-lived class 127 vehicles other than those which were preserved. Derby built Class 116 high density set, ex Tyseley set T702 comprising of 53920, 59372, 53867 is seen in all over blue livery, at Manchester Victoria. These high density sets were certainly not common to Manchester and was probably drafted in to cover the Pacer shortage at the time before withdrawal, this was one of the last Class 116 sets to carry all over blue livery and was withdrawn in this livery. 17th October 1987. This class 116 unit (TS337, 53838 at the front presumably with 59751 + 53853) waits to depart for Leamington Spa from the old terminal platforms at Birmingham Moor Street on 26/9/1987 which was supposed to be their last day of use. The unusually liveried class 116 DMS 53116 at the head of set TS611 formed with class 127 TSL 59611 and class 116 DMBS 53056, at Birmingham New Street on 12/Jul/1986. I recall that 53056 at the other end of the set was painted to match and I wondered at the time whether on one or other driving car the livery was inspired by a mistake in the grey band being taken too far beyond the saloon windows and then taken complete with white lining round the cab ends to make the best of a bad job. Having said that, the black cab window surrounds and the fact that the sides of every car and the cab ends were emblazoned with 'WM' logos probably suggests that it was a deliberate attempt at a special livery.
