They were originally part of D.T.O. 1/18.

When built 50001- 48 weighed 35 1/2 tons tare, but the substitution of 230hp engines instead of the 150hp engines - with heavier transmission and strengthened frames - added 2 tons to the weight.

When class numbers were introduced in 1973 the power cars became Class 114s and the trailers Class 148s. Later the 148s were later reclassified also as 114s.

In the early '80s surviving vehicles were renumbered from the 500xx series to 530xx and 560xx to 54xxx.

Driving Instructions

Unlike some of the other instructions in the 33003 series, the vehicle type to which this edition refers to is pretty vague, and possibly intentional so can cover a multitude of other Derby builds or Derby designed builds.

It should cover the Class 114 vehicles in their original format with Leyland engines as looking at the technical data a longer wheelbase vehicle is described with the overall length describes a twin car set.

Replacements

In 1961 a new version was issued covering all Blue Square vehicles - BR 33003-92. A companion to this was a "Preparation and Disposal" booklet BR 33003/211.

In 1968 the booklets were replaced by a three part set for Blue Square vehicles Mechanical Transmission):
BR 33003/247 1 - General Data And Equipment
BR 33003/248 2 - Driving Instructions Including Standard Preparation and Disposal Duties
BR 33003/249 3 - Fault Finding Data and Charts

In the early seventies the 33003 series was replaced by the more generic 33056 series of drivers manuals, no longer specific to any coupling code.
