The very rare sight of a DMU (classes 114 & 105) on a Liverpool Street - Cambridge service: E50003, E56014, E56114 and E51294 head the 12.05 Liverpool Street - Cambridge at Hackney Downs presumably due to shortage of loco or stock. The same unit worked Up on the 09.27 Cambridge - Liverpool Street and it wasn't doing too badly at only 8 minutes late! 16/Oct/1980. Robert Chilton.

E50004; Sheffield, January 1967. E50004 was the first DMU to be painted at Doncaster in rail-blue livery; the double-arrow symbols were painted by hand. BR produced a Design Manual when the double arrow was introduced, and this showed that the double arrow always faced forward when displayed on a ship's funnel. The paintshop at Doncaster mis-interpreted this, thinking that - as with the original BR crest - the arrow should always face the front, and so E50004 emerged from Doncaster incorrectly liveried on the driver's side. I don't know how long this remained before being corrected. David Faircloth.

It is 10.10pm by the station clock and the fume-filled York station is captured during a brief period of inactivity as Lincoln-allocated and Derby 1956-built class 114 unit No.50006-56036 gurgles away in the bay platform 11 forming a late-evening stopping service to Sheffield on 26th November 1981. My overnight on the station was just unfolding with much action to be witnessed over the next 10 hours! Gordon Edgar.

The one that got away! Class 114 DMBS 53019 Sitting in the withdrawn siding at Tyseley Depot on 15/Jul/1992. This was one of the lucky ones, being subsequently preserved at the Midland Railway - Butterley and today is the only class 114 DMBS in existence in original passenger condition. The coloured dot next to the vehicle number was part of a coding system to denote which withdrawn vehicles were to be scrapped or had been sold for further use. Robert Chilton.

New Holland Pier on 15/5/79. The station served an area of North Lincolnshire for ferry services across the Humber to Hull. Services ceased in August 1981, when the Humber Bridge was opened. I have no real recollection of this tour, where it started or finished, who ran it, I've no paperwork for it, Six Bells Junction has drawn a blank, all I know it also visited Wakefield and went through Tinsley Yard, I've a few naff photo's to tell me that, so has anybody out there got any idea's? Rotherham Masborough closed on the 3rd October 1988, replaced by Rotherham Central, although the line is still in use. Andrew J Crowther.

A 2x2 car Derby Heavyweight class 114 dmu waits at the Shirebrook Junc signals on the freight only line, with one of the Worksop-Shirebrook-Worksop Open Day shuttles on the 5th June 1987. This line that the train is on reopened to passengers as a through route again between Nottingham and Worksop in 1998 and is branded as the Robin Hood Line. The front unit is the sole South Yorkshire Transport PTE liveried unit 54004 & 53045, which was liveried up to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the SYPTE IN 1984. Andrew J Crowther.
