E50004; Sheffield, January 1967. E50004 was the first DMU to be painted at Doncaster in rail-blue livery; the double-arrow symbols were painted by hand. BR produced a Design Manual when the double arrow was introduced, and this showed that the double arrow always faced forward when displayed on a ship's funnel. The paintshop at Doncaster mis-interpreted this, thinking that - as with the original BR crest - the arrow should always face the front, and so E50004 emerged from Doncaster incorrectly liveried on the driver's side. I don't know how long this remained before being corrected. David Faircloth.

It is 10.10pm by the station clock and the fume-filled York station is captured during a brief period of inactivity as Lincoln-allocated and Derby 1956-built class 114 unit No.50006-56036 gurgles away in the bay platform 11 forming a late-evening stopping service to Sheffield on 26th November 1981. My overnight on the station was just unfolding with much action to be witnessed over the next 10 hours! Gordon Edgar.

The one that got away! Class 114 DMBS 53019 Sitting in the withdrawn siding at Tyseley Depot on 15/Jul/1992. This was one of the lucky ones, being subsequently preserved at the Midland Railway - Butterley and today is the only class 114 DMBS in existence in original passenger condition. The coloured dot next to the vehicle number was part of a coding system to denote which withdrawn vehicles were to be scrapped or had been sold for further use. Robert Chilton.

New Holland Pier on 15/5/79. The station served an area of North Lincolnshire for ferry services across the Humber to Hull. Services ceased in August 1981, when the Humber Bridge was opened. The 10.26 Doncaster - Cambridge dmu service, one of three southbound passenger services still serving the joint line in 1980. The setting is Murrow West. This was at one time the site of a flat crossing with the M&GN Peterborough - Wisbech - Sutton Bridge line on which, until its closure in 1959, the hamlet of Murrow had the extravagant facilities of a further station named Murrow East. Saturday May 8th 1982 was a much busier day than usual on the old joint line from Spalding to March, due to it being Spalding tulip parade which saw numerous special trains and associated stock and loco movements along the line. A 2x2 car Derby Heavyweight class 114 dmu waits at the Shirebrook Junc signals on the freight only line, with one of the Worksop-Shirebrook-Worksop Open Day shuttles on the 5th June 1987. This line that the train is on reopened to passengers as a through route again between Nottingham and Worksop in 1998 and is branded as the Robin Hood Line. The DTC has an unusual shape of whiskers, the DMBS has two exhaust pipes, not the joined box Derby vehicles normally had in this era. Both vehicles carry electrification flashes. Michael Mensing.

Despite succumbing to closure in September 1961, the platforms, station buildings and even the waiting shelter canopy were still intact at Cowbit on 24th October 1980, some two years before the line from March to Spalding closed completely. This Lincoln based Derby Heavyweight Class 114 DMU formed of cars E56043 & E50001 was working the 13.50 Cambridge - Doncaster local service, seen heading for its next stop at Spalding. In the early 1970s, the passenger service on the joint line was largely long distance loco hauled services, notably the Yarmouth - York, Newcastle - Norwich and Harwich - Manchester 'Boat Train' all used this route. In around 1974 DMUs took over being mainly supplied by Norwich and Lincoln depots, but occasionally Tyneside and Calder Valley sets would make appearances. Gerard Fletcher.
