551.  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Contd.)

6.  Dieselisation Costings

Half yearly of costs of operation

Mr. Nichoolls stated that the report of the Langridge Committee on diesel costs and statistics has now been circulated but has not yet been approved.  The report recommends, inter alia, that expenses of diesel multiple unit operation should be allocated to individual schemes.  L.M.R. experience is, however, that with the extension of diesel multiple unit operation and overlapping of services it is becoming increasingly difficult to segregate the costs by schemes and it is considered that the diesel multiple unit services should be treated as a whole.

7.  Conveyance of Parcels Traffic

(a) West Cumberland Scheme - Noted that owing to non-receipt of balanced sets of material, delivery of the three parcels vans for this scheme has now been retarded, but delivery of one van is now expected during March and two in April.

(b) Manchester Part 2 scheme - Noted that in the submission of this scheme to the B.T.C., two 63'6" motor parcels vans with two 230 H.P. B.U.T. engines have been requested.

(c) St.Pancras scheme - Two parcels vans with the same power equipment as passenger units to be requested for this scheme when it is submitted to the General Manager.

8.  Design of Units

(a) B.U.T. power equipment - Noted that the tests of the 230 H.P. B.U.T. engine of normal aspiration fitted to Derby built prototype vehicle have proved satisfactory and the vehicle has now gone to the Eastern Region.

(b) Coupling together of units - Matter still under consideration by B.T.C.

(c) Seating arrangements - Mr. Stanley reported that the cost of altering the seating in the 19 3-car Craven sets to bring these into line with standard units would be £375 per car. Carriage & Wagon Engineer to consult Mr. Robson.
