533.  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Contd.)

6.  Conveyance of parcels traffic

Four further parcels vans required (two for Manchester Part 2 scheme and two for St.Pancras scheme) with two 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engines under 63'6" vehicle.  Noted that this question will be considered at the meeting to be held regarding the use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engines referred to in minute 533.2.

7.  Design of Units

(a)  B.U.T. power equipments. - Noted that two 230 H.P. engines of normal aspiration fitted to a Derby prototype steel vehicle are under test.

(b)  Coupling of units. -Noted that B.T.C. still have this question under consideration.

(c)  Seating arrangements. - 18 3-car units, Metro-Cammell for Birmingham Part 2 and 19 3-car sets, Cravens, for Derby, Nottingham, Leicester (Part 1) - B.T.C. have been approached regarding provision of 24 first class seats instead of 12.  With respect to Cravens, B.T.C. feel it is too late to consider modifications.  So far as Metro-Cammell is concerned, it has been agreed that the 'D' type trailer cars shall be fitted with 12 first class seats instead of 18 second class seats, and the firm have been so advised.

Mr.Stanley will look into the possibility of Derby works making the required alteration to the Craven units.

(d)  Destination indicators. - Noted that the whole question of indicators has been referred to the Operating Committee and no further action is necessary so far as the Diesel Light Weight Trains Commitee is concerned.

(e)  Blinds. - Complaint from passenger regarding blinds on the Birmingham Part 1 units.  Noted that this matter has been cleared by the D.T.S. and C.& W.E.

534.  RAIL BUSES FOR RURAL AREAS

1.  Design. - Noted that details of design requirements have been clarified with B.T.C. and departments concerned advised.  With regard to power operated retractable steps, as considerable delay would occur if such steps were fitted, it has been agreed to accept the vehicles with the fixed top stepboard, but they will be so designed that the retractable steps equipment can be fitted at a later date if required.
