464.  INTER CITY TRAINS.  (Contd.)

3. Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford scheme.   (Contd.)

(a) Reduced number of engines per train.

(b) Reduction in number of units.

(c) Utilisation of units at week-ends.

(d) Number of units required as spares, both operating spares and motive power spares.

(e) High cost of repairs.

(f) Saving of steam engines and rolling stock.

(g) Anticipated increased revenue.

(h) Possibility of reducing parallel service from Lime Street.

4. Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester scheme.   Mr.Gould stated that some progress had been made in the preparation of this report.  The service is mainly business traffic and units would be spare on Saturdays, for which other employment would be required.  Mr.Gould will, in conjunction with Mr.Read, look into the possibility of utilising spare units at the week-ends on the Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford service (see previous minute).

465.  SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE ARRANGEMENTS

1. Minutes of meeting of Sub-Committee held on the 12th September.

Noted, the Chairman stated that the B.T.C. have approved the submission for servicing depots at Longsight, Crewe, Stoke and Buxton for the Manchester Part 1 scheme.

466.  SCHEMES AUTHORISED BY B.T.C. BUT NOT YET IN OPERATION

1. Manchester Part 1.  (Certain services not yet in operation)

The utilisation of four 2-car sets being built by Metro-Cammell with Rolls-Royce engines was considered.  Mr.Finlayson said the C.M.& E.E. would like these put into operation on the proposed Chester - Wrexham service, and Mr.Gould recommended their use on the Manchester - Buxton service.  It was agreed that, as a temporary measure, the four 2-car sets be utilised on the Manchester - Buxton service.
