446  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Cont'd).

7. Design of standard unts of 57' stock

(a) Outside colours.   Noted that B.T.C. are issuing instructions for diesel units to be painted in accordance with L.M.R. colour scheme.  Mr. Stanley gave details of the covering of the top of the cab ends of the units with fibre glass.

(b) Accomodation of 200 H.P. equipment in 57' vehicles.   Noted that C.M.& E.E. has yet to be advised by B.U.T. that 200 H.P. engines can be accomodated in 57' vehicles, and Mr. Langridge will follow the matter up with Mr.Ellis.

(c) Increase of H.P. of A.E.C. engines from 150 to 165.   Noted that an experiment is to be made on the Metro-Cammell vehicles operating on the Bury - Bacup service, B.U.T. are contacting Mr. Harrison direct.

(d) Advertising in rail cars.   The Chairman requested that Mr.Salmon expedite the reply to the General Manager's letter of 10th May.

(e) Condition of passenger stations concerned in diesel schemes.   The importance of improving conditions at the stations to be served by diesel units was stressed by the Chairman and Mr. Butland undertook to deal specially with this aspect.

447  INTER-CITY TRAINS.

1. Design of units.   Mr Stanley reported that the first vehicle will be handed over to the C.M.& E.E. for testing in 10 days time, and the second a month later. If tests prove satisfactory, experimental runs will be made on the Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford service.

Mr. Nicholls asked if, during the experiment, an assessment could be made of the fuel consumption and anticipated maintenance costs, and Mr. Langridge will arrange.

2. Design of buffet car.   Nothing further to report.

3. Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford Scheme.   Draft preliminary report to General Managers had been sent to North Eastern Region for approval, after which costings will be prepared for inclusion.

4. Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester scheme.   Report still in course of preparation.

448  MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING ARRANGEMENTS.

1. Minutes of meeting of Sub-Committee of the 8th May, 1956.

Noted.

Macclesfield.   Noted that to make provision for electric stock it would be necessary for the original design of the shed to be altered, and this is well in hand.
