439. GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY.  (Contd.)

5. Rail cars for rural areas.  (Contd.)

(b) Buckingham - Banbury Line.  (Contd.)

Mr.Read stated that the present revenue to be retained is £618 per annum and by the introduction of a diesel service about £1,500 p.a. additional revenue would be obtained.

In respect of the proposal to construct halts at Radclive and Water Stratford at an approximate cost of £500, it is estimated that increased revenue of £380 p.a. would accrue from this and it was agreed that the construction of these halts can be justified.

6. Conveyance of parcels traffic

(a) Maximum trailing load.  The Chairman stated that Messrs.Harrison and Clayton had been considering this matter. Mr.Langridge stated that the possibility of fitting 200/230 H.P. engines was being investigated by the contractors concerned, Cravens and British United Traction. It was not definite that these could be put into 57ft. vehicles and the Chairman said it appears it will be necessary to proceed with the 150 H.P. parcels vehicles on order for the West Cumberland scheme, but for all future schemes for which parcels vans are required, the question of H.P. requirements to be considered before the vans are ordered.

Mr.Gould said that in the West Cumberland area arrangements could be made for tail traffic to be limited to 25 tons by diesel haulage.

Mr.Langridge said he would have to consult Mr.Harrison regarding this, and that one way of hauling tail traffic was to use the diesel parcels vans themselves empty as locomotives in certain cases.

7. Design of standard units of 57' stock

(a) Coupling of units.  Noted that B.T.C. have been advised that as and when new schemes are being developed it may be necessary in some cases to arrange for the conversion of units in adjacent schemes to facilitate inter-working by the coupling up of units, but these can be dealt with on their merits as they arise. Mr.Gould said he had in mind exchange of units between Regions to overcome any future difficulties.

(b) Outside colours and end markings.  Noted that the Eastern Region have suggested an alternative frontal design and the matter is in hand between the General Managers.
