CONSTRUCTION OF MULTIPLE UNIT DIESEL CARS -
DERBY C. & W. WORKS.

An examination has been made of forward promises for material for diesel car production at Derby Carriage & Wagon Works, and the position would appear to be as under :-

(a)    Lightweight Cars.

      Lot Nos.   30321 - 2       15      2-car sets.
   "      " 30324 - 5   3 2-car sets.

There is a considerable amount of material outstanding and some promises of delivery are not satisfactory, but it would seem that construction in the main will proceed as planned although delivery of cars to traffic may not be strictly to schedule.

(b)   Steel Cars.

Lot Nos. 30209-10 (50 2-car sets) are due to be laid down 30th April, 1956.

There is an appreciable tonnage of steel, as under, for which delivery promises have not been received or orders have not been placed, and as delivery is required during Period I it is reasonable to assume that laydown will be delayed:-

  Angles   55 tons
  Billets   7  "
  Tees   8  "
  Plates   50  "
  Bars   68    "
      188  "

In addition, a substantial tonnage of steel is on order which is promised for delivery in Period I, 1956; whilst every effort will be made to secure delivery it must be borne in mind that at the present time the Steel Industry is working approximately three months in arrears of its promised output.
