Railcar50 - a celebration of 50 years of British Railways' First Generation DMUs.
The introduction of these vehicles in 1954 provided a dramatic improvement to the services and facilities offered to the traveling public and working conditions for staff. It was the start of a trend that continues to this day with more and more trains operated by multiple units. Numerous examples of these pioneering vehicles have now retired to heritage railways, bringing the same operational advantages as they did half a century ago. The aim of Railcar50 was to showcase the restoration work of the volunteers and the challenges faced in keeping the railcar story alive. It was held on the Severn Valley Railway, 15-17th October 2004. Please pick your destination on the left for further information.
