Vehicle W55006
Type:
GRCW Class 1122 DMBS (Driving Motor Brake Second) "Bubble Car"
Owner: Railcar Enterprises
Home Railway:
The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway
In BR passenger service: 5/1958 –
1992

These single unit railcars were built by Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon currently with the cross-country units (later Class 119) and had the same power unit and other details, but the bodywork was to the Derby high density suburban layout. They had full width driving cabs each end, which led to their earlier nickname of 'double-enders'. They seated 65 second class passengers, and in most cases replaced the GWR railcars. Being blue square coupling they also were often used to strengthen other DMU formations.

55006 was delivered new to Tyseley (Birmingham) and worked around the Birmingham area i.e. Leamington, Dudley, Stratford and was a regular visitor to the Severn Valley when BR services were in operation.

It has also spent time at Manchester working the Stockport to Stalybridge service. Penzance became its last allocated depot, from where it worked the Cornish Branches ironically replacing the newer Class 142s which were struggling on the tight bends. This move saved its life !!! 1992 saw its eventual withdrawal and was moved firstly to store at Blackpool and then to MC Metals at Glasgow. After asbestos removal it was purchased by Mike Evans in 1995 who restored it on the Mid Norfolk Rly, and it entered service in July 1997. 2004 saw 55006 move to the Ecclesbourne Valley Rly at Wirksworth in Derbyshire.

55006 will be in traffic at Railcar50.
