An innovative idea to use a single 117 car was tried, with great success, on the
Mid Hants Railway during the Spring Steam gala in March 2007, when W51400 was paired with Beattie 2-4-0 30585 on the
Alresford-Ropley shuttle. The first three shots are of this. Ian McDonald |

W51400 had one engine running to provide air and of course
when going back from Ropley to Alresford down the hill the cab of W51400 was leading
and therefore could provide braking thus negating the need for a runround
manoeuvre at either end. It could also provide power if the steam engine had
failed but on this weekend this was not necessary. Ian McDonald |

There was also a terrific double header
with the Terrier (ex 32662) and the Beattie Well Tank (30585). All four pictures
were taken on the 2nd March 1987. Ian McDonald |
