An official Met-Camm image (negative DZ130, un-matted version) showing a bogie for a 'Lightweight' 79xxx power car. The final drive can be seen fitted to the closest axle, the end frame of the bogie lowered for the cardan shaft to be fitted. The short footsteps on the front tell us this will be fitted to the cab end of a vehicle, the other bogie would have longer footsteps for the van. Metropolitan Cammell.

A Met-Camm publicity image that was used in several of their trade adverts such as celebrating 300, 500 and 600 diesel railcars supplied. It shows an Eastern Region Met-Camm Lightweight set with Lowestoft on the destination blind, location unknown, circa early 1956. It seems to be a posed shot (and so not necessarily in East Anglia) - there are no passengers on board and unless the track in the foreground is out of use it is on the wrong line for the driver to be at this end. The colour of the seats can be clearly seen in the DTS(L), maroon moquette and tan vinyl. Metropolitan Cammell.

This was probably to show the underframe equipment, and this is the number one (drivers) side, with the exhaust heading to the rear of the vehicle on the right. The most obvious differences from the 5xxxx series Met-Camms is the different style of radiator and different style of engine air intake oil bath filter (the cylinder on the left of the engine). Sunbeams and a Met-Camm (pjs 1259). In many ways this is an interesting picture. It shows a scene in the 1950's of a Metro-Cammell unit, obviously very new, standing under the arched roof of the Midland side at Birmingham New Street station while working a British Industries Fair shuttle. The other point about the picture is that it is a transparency not a negative, Peter used a roll of monochrome reversal film. I have spent a long time looking for the negative before realising what it was, it was used in Peter's talk on the Photo Club circuit about 'A Life in Transport' Image by Peter Shoesmith late April or early May 1956. A driver trainee at the controls of a Met-Camm Lightweight unit circa October 1956. He was on the second week of a course at a newly opened Eastern Region school at St Ronans, Hadley Wood, which taught steam locomotive drivers in diesel techniques. The small white board in front of him has the speed ranges for each gear. At the time there were just 55 units on the Region (Derby Lightweights and Met-Camm Lightweights) based at Lincoln, Norwich and Stratford. The school was opened to prepare and train drivers in readiness for the extension of diesel-operated services. British Railways.

A trainee driver at the controls of a Met-Camm Lightweight while others await their turn to drive. They were on the second week of a two week diesel driving course (week one was in the classroom) at Ilford diesel school, circa November 1957. Three Stratford allocated units were normally used on the course, one of each of the three types it had (Derby Lightweight, Met-Camm Lightweight and Wickham) to give drivers a wider experience. The training runs ran over specified sections, timetabled to phase in with normal traffic, and each of the twelve attendees would complete some 100 miles of driving under instruction which included between 20 and 30 station stops.
