105 DMU

Stratford-upon-Avon station seen from the Alcester Road bridge circa 1978. The train in platform 3 is a hybrid unit of one coach a class 105 and two of class 116. Note the different number of white painted door steps of the class 116 showing that these units had a greater number of doors for suburban use. The other DMU in platform 1 had just arrived and is one of the "reverse colour" class 116s. This will be going to Birmingham Moor Street after shunting into platform 2, while in the Down Goods Loop is a charter headed by a pair of class 25s. On the left of the picture is the site of the food store with the canopy of the loading bay just visible. Goods for the cold store were taken by rail to the then loop line, known locally as the Cold Store Loop, to the left of the blue DMU and then shunted into the store's own line for unloading. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

After work on 1 July 1986 I kept an eye open for T702, the last all-blue class 116 DMU, to appear again at Stratford-upon-Avon. The diagrams weren't straightforward for any particular unit and involved trips over several different routes. This unit had clearly switched to the Leamington Spa line as it arrived at Stratford ready to form the 18.35 service back to that town. I had a word with the signalman on the 2nd shift and established that he was happy for me to take a lineside shot as the train left the station. The signal in the foreground is the lower quadrant controlling the exit from the Cold Store Siding by then used only for the overnight stabling of stock (and failed units awaiting rescue). TS702 is presumably formed 53867 + 59372 + 53920. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

In 1986 I lived within sight of the railway line at Stratford-upon-Avon and from my kitchen window on 1 July 1986 saw the last all-blue class 116 (set L702, presumably 53867 + 59372 + 53920) arrive from Birmingham Moor Street to form the 08.00 departure back to the West Midlands. I grabbed a camera and asked the signaller, a good friend, if I might take a shot from his window as the unit crossed the Stratford-upon-Avon canal alongside a good show of elderflower on the embankment. A class 121 single unit had fortunately for me just gone towards the station with an arrival to leave a few minutes later as the 08.12 to Leamington Spa. I didn't have time to wait for this to leave as it was time to head off to work in town. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

Tyseley's class 116 unit T702 (53867 and presumably 59372 + 53920) stands in platform 3 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 7 June 1986 with the 08.30 to Birmingham Moor Street and before the driver had returned to the cab after shunting the train from platform 1 and changed the lights to white. At this time several DMUs were stabled overnight in the platforms here as the station office was a crew signing-on point with its own allocation of drivers and guards. A class 121 single car unit is just visible behind T702 waiting to shunt into platform 1 and work Leamington Spa trains. In the winter the units were left with their engines idling all night, possibly because they wouldn't have started on a frosty morning, and a cloud of dense stinking diesel exhaust often hung over the station area. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

A bit of smelly exhaust smoke at Bordesley Junction as two class 116 DMUs climb from the Moor Street lines towards St Andrews Junction and Birmingham New Street with an ECS from Tyseley depot which will later work on the Cross City Line between Blake Street and Redditch. This amount of smoke was commonplace with these DMUs when their engines were cold. 21 February 1987. Peter Tandy.

117 DMU

An everyday scene at Worcester Shrub Hill from 15 December 1984 with set B436 (presumably 51334 + 59500 + 51376, and another set attached) entering the station with a train from Birmingham New Street which will reverse here before turning left towards Foregate Street and Hereford. In 2021 the gantry of semaphore signals is still extant but a class 37 would not be seen in the former shed while waiting for its next job, along with a fellow class member, as a banker on the Lickey incline. Peter Tandy.

104 DMU

At Manchester Victoria on 6 December 1984 25 284 draggs a failed class 104 DMU formed of 53503 + 53448 into the station. Another class 104 unit and 2 class 120s can be seen in the suburban part of the station and another class 25 acting as station pilot is just about visible on the through lines in the darkness of the station. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

Late in the afternoon of 11 April 1987 a 3-car class 116 DMU waits to leave Stratford-upon-Avon for Birmingham Moor Street. Steam locomotive 35028, with an ETHEL marshalled behind the tender, was pulling its train forward in platform 2 after being watered before leaving for London Marylebone. Peter Tandy.

122 DMU

Two bubbles, 55003 (leading) and 55034, at Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 11 April 1987. In the down goods line is 47 610, sent by Saltley to shunt a steam special hauled by 35028 Clan Line. Peter Tandy.

121 DMU

The towpath of the Stratford-upon-Avon was a good spot to photograph a short train on a sunny evening such as that of 2 May 1989 when the Midline bubble 55033 (T133) was coupled to a class 114 to work the 18.13 to Leamington Spa. This view has now gone in common with many others throughout the country thanks to completely uncontrolled growth of lineside vegeation. The semaphore signals (one complete with a pigeon on the arm!) and the Victorian hospital were still extant at the time but were not to last much longer. Peter Tandy.

101 DMU

53331 is seen at the rear of a six-car rake of 101's stabled in platform 18 at Waverley station on 12/7/93. The train comprises sets 991 (53331/59125/53308) and 829 (51246/59118/53305) and will later form the 17.27 to Perth via Cardenden and Ladybank. During Spring and Summer 1993, Haymarket had a handful of Laira and Reading hand-me-downs at work – another was 53315/59115/53330 – along with its quartet of refurbished cl.101 triples (101 691-4), mainly on Fife peak hour workings like this. By the end of the year, they were all gone, superseded by the refurbished cl.117’s let go by Tyseley once the Cross City line electrification was finally complete. Notice that 53331 still bears its yellow stripe over the first class saloon from its NSE days, even though ScotRail would have declassifed the saloon. Leonard Rogers.

On 12/7/93, set 829 (53305/59118/51246) is seen stabled in platform 18 at Waverley station. 53305 is nearest to the camera. Behind 829 and fairly much out of sight is set 991 (53308/59125/53331). Later they will form the 17.27 to Perth via Cardenden and Ladybank. During Spring and Summer 1993, Haymarket had a handful of Laira and Reading hand-me-downs at work – another was 53315/59115/53330 – along with its quartet of refurbished cl.101 triples (101 691-4), mainly on Fife peak hour workings like this. The 17.05 Fife "Outer Circle" train (Edinburgh to Edinburgh via Dunfermline, Thornton and Kirkcaldy) leaves Waverley station on 27/7/93. It is formed of set 991 (53331/59125/53308), transferred to Haymarket five months previously from Reading, where it had been set L838 with Network South East. Its stay at Haymarket would not last much longer - it was transferred to Longsight the following month and put into departmental use there another month after that. During Spring and Summer 1993, Haymarket had a handful of Laira and Reading hand-me-downs at work – others were 53315/59115/53330 and 53305/59118/51246 – along with its quartet of refurbished cl.101 triples (101 691-4), mainly on Fife peak hour workings like this. By the end of the year, they were all gone, superseded by the refurbished cl.117’s let go by Tyseley once the Cross City line electrification was finally complete. Leonard Rogers.

107 DMU

In the depths of Waverley station, at around 17.55 on a late March afternoon, 51986 leads 107 726 into the old platform 1 (now number 2), to form the 17.57 to Dunbar. The date is 31/3/90 and the set is passing 43055 at the head of the much-delayed 17.30 to KX at platform 19. The other cars in the set will presumably be 59803 and 52018. The area over which the DMU is passing is nowadays occupied by the modern platforms 20 and 1. Leonard Rogers.

107 DMU

52035 is seen stabled at Waverley station on 31/3/90. Although the stylised GG logo started to be dropped from DMU's some nine years previously, this car still manages to retain one as well as the TransClyde branding. Leonard Rogers.

107 DMU

On a murky March afternoon, 107 749 leaves Waverley station, forming the 17.20 to Hamilton West via Shotts and Motherwell, on 31/3/90. Leonard Rogers.

117 DMU

51394 leads set 117 314 leaving Waverley station, on the 16.47 to Cowdenbeath, on 27/7/93. The set had just been allocated to Haymarket, having been transferred from Tyseley, for a couple of months and would go on to work out the last five or so years of its life from the Edinburgh depot, on workings like the one shown here. Leonard Rogers.

117 DMU

A Class 117 set at Penzance on 26/10/94, formed 51386 + 51344. Sparegang.
